Gents,

Anyone know anything about the 458 Alpine? All I have gotten so far is that it's the WSM opened up to 458. Would like any load data if it's out there.

Thank,

Roger QSL

Boomy,
SSGA's cartridge is different. He's blown the shoulder forward ... hat's off to him ... he's achieved more than he expected from the short case. And in true wildcat pioneering fashion ... copped a shit load of grief for even considering such a case from the Aussie forums (I even stuck the sharp stick in a few times ... but we Aussie take the piss out of each other pretty much most of the time) and placing it in a Browning A-Bolt. I ask you ... which sane man builds a wildcat and places it in a Browning A-Bolt!!
Cheers...

Are you saying i am not sane???? Or are you having a crack at Browning A-bolts?????

Seriously, for a hunting rifle it is fantastic. esp magazine and tang safety.

All in all I am ecstatic about how well this little cartridge performs esp on big animals.....

My "boss" is away for a few days and this lovely rain has settled North of the divide .. I should have been out the door at 3am this morning and hunting ... instead I'm at home tapping away on the keyboard! CRYBABY

Gentlemen

If your wanting a 416 Taylor and your gunsmith chambers in 338 Win Mag and necks in 416 the shoulder end up set back 65 thou from the correct 416 Taylor Dimensions

Similarly

I think you will find, cambering in 300WSM and necking in 458 will give you and entirely different case to the 458 Alpine, the shoulders are much further forward in the Alpine design than they would be to a 300 WSM/458neck combination, the Alpine case has a short neck

Infact it would be easier to form a 458 Alpine case from necking down shortened 300 Ultra mag cases than necking up 300 WSM and having to blow the shoulder forward, although the case necks would be thicker

Con why didn't we organise something this morning, we could have got over to Benella and knock over a deer this afternoon, if you wanted to get real wet.

But the next deer will die to the hit of a 458AR

regards
S&F

S&F,
1. I assumed you were working all day.
2. Only the 470Capstick is sighted with ammunition ready to go ... this is very typical for me not to have a rifle ready.
3. I was too dumb to think of it.
4. Full freezer with half a cow yet to come.
5. I also want the next Sambar to be taken with my 458AR Big Grin
Cheers...

very very good work...
having gone through the trials, the ups and downs, and highs and lows of wildcatting many times, it is worth it....

now, i have to brag... we went from conception on oct 12 to me having 3 firing rifles on dec 30, in 2005 .. which i think is my peronal best..

then the 500 ar sat for nearly a year waiting for a barrel maker to NOT make the barrel

Yes It wasn't the money issue here it was the fact that the parts just were not a simple puzzle to put together.......then the whole make up loads etc. So it was just time factor.

Highs and Lows, well you forget about the lows when the first target shows one hole for 3 shots, or the chrony shows much higher and the extraction is the bolt lifted..... dancing

Jeffe,
See those pretty deer ... they'll be the 458AR's primary game.

Guys,
To be fair to the publishers and author ... article is from Guns & Game magazine Issue No57, Jan-Mar 2008. Breil Jackson's magazine has introduced quite a few wildcats on the Aussie scene and turned it into the best publication Down Under bar none.

I suppose I should drop them an email regarding the 458AR's clap
Cheers...
