We may have to have the same thread in the medium and small bore forums. Please try to keep your votes to 375 and up. If you must have a 9,3 in your vote, well ok.

I'm thinking that there should be a vote for rimmed and non-rimmed. The 416 Rigby and the 450 NE would get my votes!
The .318WR for smallbore.

What about the 6.5x54MS? It has an exotic head size, was used by Hemingway and Bell (for elephants) and the only chambering (known to me, at least) was in the pretentious Mannlicher Schoenauer.

The .458 Winchester Magnum has panache above all other cartridges.
At one time it had just about killed off all the other cartridges with any semblance of panache.
It had a monopoly on panache until the Munitions-Industrial Complex (MIC)
noticed declining revenues from the oversimplification brought by the .458 WIN.
A cabal of evil-doers set out to undermine the .458 WIN by sabotaging factory ammo production,
and planting fake news amongst the gossips.
The rest is history.
The .458 WIN has overcome all, and is now better than ever with the new powders and bullets available today.

Did You Know?
Few can match the panache of French poet and soldier Cyrano de Bergerac. In his dying moments, he declared that the one thing left to him was his panache, and that assertion at once demonstrates the meaning of the word and draws upon its history. Panache derives via Middle French from Late Latin pinnaculum, meaning "small wing" or "gable," a root that also gave English the word pinnacle. In both French and English, panache originally referred to a showy, feathery plume on a hat or helmet; its "dashing" figurative sense developed from the verve and swagger of one bold enough to wear such an adornment in public. When the dying Cyrano turned his huge nose heavenward and spoke of his panache, his nose became the literal and figurative pinnacle of a multifaceted pun.

And the Panache award goes to...(Drum roll)
The 577
Yes! King of Panache in both black powder and smokeless in all its lengths. From the tigers of India to the Pachederms of Pachedermia.
We all knew it had to have a rim...Didn't we?
If we took away the rim category, well then if you said 500 Jeffery, you were correct. The 505 was a close second with the 500 Schuler with the assist on that one.

So, the top ten in order of ultimate panache on down to semi panache...

577 NE/BPE
500 Jeffery
450 NE
577/500
505 Gibbs
404 Jeffery
400 Jeffery
425 WR
375 Flanged
400 Whelen (Mrrica!!!!)

375 HH and 416 Rigby did not make the list due to too many common people owning them. Those grubby blue collar bubba types just ruined those otherwise fine carts.

Honorable mention to the 4 bore muzzle loader. Although not a cartridge, it was the choice of Frederick Selous.

Now, please grade your papers and pass them forward.

The Lott is too new and too many uncouth people with lack of good breeding have them.
There has to be a sense of rarity to add to the panachiness. The wheel gun category has its own gems. The 45 colt is so storied that it is in a class of its own. That is a good thread topic for sure. Some great candidates for that one.

The .505 Gibbs gets my vote.

Followed by the .404 Jeffery.

I always wanted a .505 Gibbs, a .404 Jeffery and a .303 British.

That would make a nice African battery!

Big bores? Has to be the .577 Nitro Express. It just says I'm a bit more serious than the .470 Nitro Express but I'm a bit more practical than the .600 Nitro Express. That's panache!

But, you know, the classiest cartridge with the most panache of all is your .30-06. Meuse-Argonne, Bastogne, Iwo Jima, Pork Chop Hill. Good too for any game in the USA. Real panache.

boomstick,

Oh, I get it now, you meant panache in the sensibilities of a guy with a feathered plume on the top of his pith helmet, which cartridge gives him the stiffest pinky finger.

It is certainly not the .458 WIN.
Never mind.

I'm a little biased, because these cartridges have my name on them:

Rimmed: 450/400
Rimless: 404

I spell mine slightly different though. (Jeffrey v. Jeffery)

The man said big bores, not the little cartridges mentioned above. Wink

The correct answer is 4-bore!

A few thou over 1" (1.005" to be precise).

That's 129.7 grams/2000 grains.

1965 grains of hardcast Lyman#2 after several feet of elephant.

That said, the 577, 275, 318, and 505 are pretty cool too!

Bob
