I'm proceeding with my 400PDK project. This will be the smaller brother to my 416. Vision a 400Whelen with a 458" shoulder moved forward.

Anyway the 416 was on a very heavy contour. Thinking a little lighter on this one.

Will carry a low power scope and express sights.

Contour suggestions appreciated.

As usual just my $.02

yep one of the threads I found. I have a stock ready to go after a little trim down of cheek piece. Used it for about 20 years on my 280.

If you are talking about the case I don't have a drawing of it and don't have time to draw it before I leave town in the morning. I've discussed the 416 on the wildcatboard. This thread https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/...=659108816#659108816
Has the Published writeup on the 280 version along wil pics of the 280-340 and a dummy 416. I thought I had kept a fully formed 416 but can't find it and the rifle and all brass is in Alaska currently locked away while my buddy spends a few months in Russia on business.

So just use the 280 numbers with a .411 neck.

What a surprise. Smiler As I've stated in the wildcat forum. A 2.6" case in a 3.4" magazine would gain me no NET capacity therefore no velocity increase. There is more than enough neck to hold the bullet.

When my boss talked me into building him a 340PDK he wanted to us AHR brass thinking the longer case had to give him more velocity. After forming the 2.6" AHR case had equal capacity to my 2.5" blown out 280 Norma case. However when you stuck a bullet in it to the same OAL the net capacity was several grains less. His longer case gave him less net capacity and less velocity.

If you don't believe the length of the neck will have no effect do what I did take a nice long necked 30-06. Shorten the neck by .1-.2" the loads will not change nor will the velocity because the net capacity doesn't change.

Time to hit the road. Have a good week.

Boom Stick

Is is what I got from the 416 version when I had it. Loads are IMR4895
Bullet Charge Velocity
350Speer
68 2400
67 2385 Most Accurate
66 2365
65 2350

300 Hawk
70 2570 Accurate
69 2555
68 2525

400Hawk
67 2205
66 2190
65 2160 Accurate

My buddy is using only 340s and the load data he gave me is:
340 Woodleigh IMR 4064
68.5 2435
68 2430 MOA
67 2410
66 2395
65 2375
64 2360
63 2340
Since the case is the same and the bullets will only be .411 vs .416 I would expect very close to the same velocity in the 411 version.

I believe the #5 was the one I used on the 416. In measuring some of my barrels total metal thickness (both sides added). In my 308Norma I have .214 in my 358N it is .254 and I believe the 458&375 Whitworths used the same contour that would give a 458 with .224.

If I start with a 26" #4 which is .650" at the muzzle I would have .239" about half way between the 458 and my 358N but since I want a 24" when I shorten it I get .256" or equal to or greater than the 1/4".

Thoughts???
