I feel a little foolish. I looked the chamber over closer and it is for a belted magnum. A 458 Lott round fits and the extractor groove lines up with the extractor. The bolt face measures .532.
It is almost like an improved Lott.

welcome to the club Butch. Sounds like you got a real nice DGR on the cheap. What do fire-formed cases look like?

It is not a Lott as it has a sharp or improved shoulder. It does not have the case taper of the Lott. It looks to be 2.900 in brass length. It is about 2.450 to the shoulder and the neck is .385 long. That would make the shoulder about .065 tall. The diameter at the shoulder is .506+-. and the diameter above the belt is .510.

Thought about this some --
Perhaps an ICL cartridge--
the .450 ICL African(?),
not very popular;
it had a sharper shoulder than did the Ackley and it was slightly further forward.

Can't find my old ICL reamer spec sheet(too much junk in the cave Roll Eyes )

Sounds like you may have an Ackley.

It looks like a 450 Ackley. The Watts has a longer neck. I will put it back together and fireform a round and see what happens.

Very close to an "Ackley-ized" 450 Barnes Supreme...2.83", shoulder 0.498", neck length 0.350" for the Barnes.

Chamber Cast or fireformed case sent to CH4D or PT&G might get you better nomenclature.

Very interesting and useful I would guess, whatever it is.

Here are some photos. I did purchase this from an AR member who is in Africa as we speak. Said he bought it 15-20yrs ago and never researched it or shot it.

The last photo is the fireformed case on the left and the parent case on the right and is a 458 Lott.

I fireformed a loaded Lott round in it this morning. For some reason it looks larger than it is in the photo. I think I have a keeper. It will get iron sights.

wow -- the fireformed looks like a belted gibbs, rather than a lott based case.

That was quite a deal that you got on that rifle. I, like many others, was sorely tempted.

JBrown,
I am very happy with it. Biebs was very fair and very truthful. A good set of iron sights, new custom scope bases, and a stock redo will make a real fine rifle. The stock inletting was done by somebody that knew what he was doing.

Hey Butch, just got back this weekend, great hunt in Mozambique. Glad the rifle is working out for you. I didn't have your time or talent to work through the caliber issues, but it looks like it will be a powerhouse when you get it set up. ...Biebs

If it's a .458 cal., it looks like a .450 Ackley.

AMMO Guide and the Ackley book show it to be a 450 Ackley Magnum. Fireform a mag. basic case and you are ready to go.

Question...

Can you measure the fired case to see how much the casehead expanded. It looks in the pic that about 1/4" in front of the belt there is a lot of expansion. could be just the pic.

OK.
It measures .511 at .250 above the belt. My brass agrees with Donnaly's book and differs with Ken Howell's book on the 450 Ackley magnum.
