All of this Big Bore Show & Tell has proven inspirational. I hereby instigate and request an official "Ugliest Gun" contest. The proposed format: Three photos 800 x 600 each. One of the photos must be a target or deceased game animal taken with the described ugly gun. Voting by poll after final submissions. Any caliber or type of centerfire RIFLE or SHOTGUN. One week submission period in the fall. (plenty of time to create your masterpiece or in RIP's case choose one from his stable) An ugly Trophy shall be awarded to the master of the Ugliest Gun.

Too bad you said rifle. I have one shotgun in my gun safe that would make a good contender. ****************************** There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor polite, nor popular -- but one must ask, "Is it right?" Martin Luther King, Jr.

The competition will be far too stiff for an average ugly to win. There are some extremely ugly rifles out there. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

I am holding back until I see some of the competition. That will give me a chance to dress down a winner out of my stable. A simple touch like adding a satin-silver-finished scope and gaudy camo-stripe stock and metal painting, then dragging it with a chain across some asphalt pavement ... might do it. Remember the little things too, like Weaver rings. 3 or 4 of them on a scope is even uglier than 2. Oops! I have fierce competition here, so better shut up. I do think that a condition of the competition should be that the rifle, or shotgun, be a seriously functional, and accurate, hunting firearm. The minimum standard for this is that the firearm has been blooded by the owner. Game photo +/- target group or "pattern" should also accompany the entry.

Entry fee is history. If they're are a large number of entries there could be three catagories. 1) Roccoco Ugly 2) Backwoods Ugly 3) Circus Ugly

Here is Jimatcat's submission. Those of you who were at the wonderful Big Bore Shoot in Houston (Thanks again Jeffeosso and Rusty for putting that on) might remember this lovely gun... Sorry for the large size but it is needed to see this in all its glory. A Remington rear sight taped on the barrel of a Mauser Werke-In-Progress? And the taped-on front sight is not visible in that pic. That ain't fair. O.K., no entry fee and no conditions, but the firearm has to at least be finished!

As Wink offered earlier ...if you guys think that's an Ugly Gun then Y'all gotta big surprise comin' ...there are some severely hideous devices out there that pass for rifles. There's time to refine the format and set the submission dates but I'd think an eligible gun is one thats: 1) Man portable 2) Centerfire with fixed ammuntition. (no front loaders) 3) Chambered in a rifle or shotgun cartridge 4) Submitted with one photo of a dead target or animal. "Finished" is somewhat subjective like Ugly is subjective. RIP - you may have to unfinish something or create something totally new if you want to compete at this level ... I don't think a few stickers and some taped on sights on what is otherwise a perfectly normal rifle is gonna win Jack..!!

Alluded, as in allusion, not "illuded" (no such word) as in illusion. We don't want any illusions here, just the real thing. Proper spelling should not be allowed to elude you when stating official rules, else the allure of ugly rifles will suffer. Sophisticated owners of ugly rifles might be put off by bad spelling.

Sorry Boom I couldn't resist. I'm a native to the Central Coast, but where I grew up the small ranches are 3,000 acres so boots were pretty much the required uniform. In college in SLO I got pretty familiar with sandals but I'm afraid those shoes of yours are new to me. My 13 year old son wears "flip flops" as much as he can and hunts in Vans if I'll let him so he's probably up to speed with your Sanuks. Oops, I really hi-jacked this one didn't I? Now back to the ugly rifles...

My first shotgun. Not only is it a fine fowling piece but an automatic of sorts. Upon firing, the breech flies open and ejects the shell over the top of one's head! NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.

Those two rifles are " stick-on ugly " and "screw-on" ugly. We need deep "through-and -through" ugly. Original design ugly. Most Weatherby's would have a head start in the competition.

The hose clamps reminded me... About the first year I started guiding (1988) I took out the dentist my wife worked for and only noticed AFTER he made a much longer shot than I should have ever let him take (and killed the pig cleanly with one shot) that his rear scope base had been carved out of a big CHUNK OF RUBBER!!! The scope moved all over the place with very little pressure. I was stunned! He was one of those guys with 16 tons of (over) confidence and 2 ounces of experience... and with my lack of guiding experience I hadn't even checked over his equipment. How he made that shot was a miracle. I made sure he had STEEL bases before he went on his next hunt. Kyler

I don’t have a picture of it so you’ll just have to take my word for it. Purchased from a local pawn shop, a Greek Mannlicher action with a Remington model 722, 300 Savage barrel re-chambered to 308 Win. This sat in a 64-65 period model 70 Winchester stock with the trigger guard from a single shot shotgun. Guard screws were hex heads from a hardware store. The rotary magazine for the Mannlicher was missing and in its place a magazine from a 760 Remington, 30-06 length. The magazine was too long to fit in the mag box so the back had been cut off to length. The magazine was being held up in place by a popcicle stick. This is the ugliest (and scariest) thing by far that I have ever seen that was passing as a hunting rifle. And no I didn’t make this up. The current owner has taken it apart but if I can get him to put it back together I’ll take pictures.
