This would be the perfect cartridge for a 6.5-pound-dry-weight Pre-64 M70 featherweight with stainless No.3 sporter barrel 23" long, with a 1-pound graphite and Kevlar stock. Four in the box and one up the spout, still slick feeding after all these years. The cosmetic shoulder on this cartridge will be 12.5-thou-per-side. Or a bit heavier rifle on a CZ with 5 or 6 in the box, and plenty of nose room for the bullets. 310, 325, 330, 340, 410-grain bullets at gentlemanly velocity.

I've always wondered why someone didn't just neck up the 375 H&H case to .423 without "improving" it, keeping the nice tapered case. It seems like it would do at least as well as nominal 404 Jeffery loads (400g at 2150 fps), feed well, have cheap abundant brass available. Maybe the 416 Rem Mag made it irrelevant ... Yep, good idea. Hasn't boom stick done the .423 H&H already? Certainly better than the 400 H&H with .410-caliber bullet and ultra-long neck. The unadulterated .395 neck-up of the .375 H&H to .395 has a .387" neck length, better than the .35" neck length of the .375, what with that substantial shoulder and all. Easy to change a ".375" to a ".395" on the headstamp.

The .423" would get rid of the shoulder completely AKA the 404-375 One of our brethren down under is working on it. for the 395 may I humbly suggest the 400-300 WM... Almost the same capacity and since the 375 will still have a shoulder... Or what about more taper and a cal length necked ghost shouldered 400 vs a microshoulder on the full length HH case? The no shoulder case should be about the same capacity as the 400 NE original 3" 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. Oh yeah, another ".425 Express" is a necked up .416 Taylor, using .423" bullets. I forget things I used to know. Cameron Hopkins of Guns magazine? Turns out Eley loaded some proof ammo for the .400" BSA and something called the .400"/.375 H&H Velopex. The .395 H&H will look something like this, only with .400"-.005" bullet, up to 410-grain weight, and a faint H&H shoulder, parallel neck (no ghost shoulder about it), and greater case capacity:

... Dr. Ken Howell shows a .40 BSA that uses a .408" diameter bullet, 2.800" case length, straight taper of a .375 H&H case ...
