thanks all for the being happy for me in the beginnings of my big bore hobby... A special thanks to Rich for his generosity in making it happen. I have just started the fun and insanity and I am sure it will take me to Africa and beyond 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. Well most here dont count my 45-70... Off the bench with +p+ loads and the chew toy "recoil pad" the 45-70 was worse. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

Did that cold Vegas wind numb your senses? Seriously though, what kind of 45-70 do you have? My 1895GS (22" barrel, hard rubber "pad") with 405gr Rem boolitz at 1900+fps (hot!, very +P), is an order of magnitude less recoil than what you shot this weekend. I'd compare it more with a 375 H&H than a real big bore like the 550G or 505G. Cheers, Canuck

350's @ 2050 in a guide gun off the bench not standing... Anyhoo at least I got the 505 vid up Next time I will have to shoot side by side. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

Apples to apples testing. Both need to be shot off of the bench for comparisons sake! You did great, Boomie! "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid." JWP If stupidity hurt, a lot of people would be walking around screaming. Semper Fidelis "Building Carpal Tunnel one round at a time"

No doubt... But if I had a choice I would rather shoot the biggn's standing shooting the big boomers from the bench will take some practice to get used to I am sure... I would use a Caldwell sled and that cool recoil pad Rich has... No sense in getting kicked by a mule when you can stand beside it. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

There is nothing wrong with that logic. You gotta bench 'em bareback a few times just to truly appreciate it though. A matter of deepening one's perspective. Cheers, Canuck

from hot loaded 45-70 to factory 505 Gibbs is a big step, and then just one more to the 550. I did not load either "hot", didn't want the industry boys to drop the rifle like some of Saeed's video heroes did! If I can get him to drive up this spring we'll stick him behind some of those 2500+fps dingers and finish his education. Rich DRSS Knowledge not shared is knowledge lost...

Boomer, I have a nice little 1895CB that has been cut to 22" and had lots of stuff done to it by Dave Clay. I agree with you. That little bastard hurts worse than my .470 or any of my .458 Lotts. It is just way more snappy with hostile loads.

I still find that hard to believe, given how tame my 45/70 is with comparable loads. Are we maybe talking two different things? Are you just talking about how your shoulder feels? ie. the "bite" part of recoil? If so, I can beleive that...my 300 WM is the worst recoiling rifle I have from that perspective. But. excluding the "bite from the butt" for a moment, just from a pushing your shoulder way back, snapping your neck (whiplash action), twisting your spine, retinal-detaching concussive force perspective, surely your 45/70's don't come close the big 470's and 500's...??? Mine is not even is that same order of magnitude. Cheers, Canuck

Boomie's a big boy, six-one and about two-thirty-five. I wake up every morning there, go grab a shower, and while I'm getting dressed he's on the floor making these grunting noises! Sit ups, ab crunches, and pushups...jeez! We're in Vegas and he's exercising. But, the video shows how well the McCoy recoil system works. Rich DRSS Knowledge not shared is knowledge lost...

well the +p+ loads in the guide gun off the bench left me bruised...I did not bruise from shooting the 505 or the 550 standing. I think it is the recoil impulse of the lighter gun and the way the guide gun design is not ideal for recoil made the difference. Next time I will shoot side by side. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

Canuck, I guess I should say more snappy, face slappy and finger bitting than my big stuff. The .45-70 is definitely not a heavier, spine twisting recoiling rifle than my Lotts or my .470. It is the stock design and the lever/ trigger that pinch and slap me with the .45-70. A slim light lever gun is a crappy configuration for heavy recoil.

...........................................................................Ya that retnal detaching concussive force ,,,,,snapping your neck ,,,,twisting the spine ...........................I,ve got 2 words for that ,,,,,,,,,,muzzle brake ... ....But it does look like that recoil pad/ system on Rich,s rifle works very good ...................I thot Boomy made that rifle look normal size , as from the vid it looks like a " great big gun " .......... .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

The only difference in men and boys is the size of the mens toys!! Is this penis envy taking over the gun world or just a disgruntled golfer trying to commit suicide... I know for a fact that Robgunbuilder is a retired careless suicide bomber, missing fingers on both hands, thus such recoiling exploding calibers as the 600 Nitro Express are nothing more that pesky mosquitos to him... The gun has a regular pad as far as I know but Rich does have a special shoulder pad that I tried and it worked good but those vids are without the pad. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

Boomy, Surestrike: Yah, I am pretty sure we are using the term "recoil" very broadly and just referring to somewhat different aspects of it. I am usually just referring to the overall force and speed of the recoil. The snappy, uncomfortableness of lighter rifles, or poorly designed rifles, I usually try to discount. My 300 WM and my old 375 H&H are the only rifles that have ever bruised me. My 416 T, 470 Mbogo and 500 A2 have never come close...but they are designed much, much better that way. That said, 10 or 12 full house loads from my 500 A2 will give me a shooter's headache! (mild concussion, I am sure!) From a standing position it feels like I can shoot my 470 Mbogo all day, but when I bench that sucker, without any padding I am good for 6 or less! It doesn't bruise me, but it'll actually make my arm go numb from the shoulder down. My 45-70 sho' as heck don't do that! With a sissy pad, some lead shot, or better yet, the ol lead slead, its far more tolerable. Boomy, sounds like we are about the same size(ish)...not at all surprised you made those bad boys look easy. Cheers, Canuck
