Well, I just sent Ed Plummer an email about building me a 600OK on a Granite Mountain action. A few years back, not long after the initial run were built, Ed did build me that dream rifle. As happens in life, other unfortunate events prevented me from taking possession though I had paid for the rifle, had a stash of Bridgers in two weights and space in my safe for it all. The pictures were beautiful and Ed sold it to someone whom I hope used it and had fun. Well, a new position a new house in a new state and though I have a stable of new guns I feel the need for something bigger and badder than me (OK, most things and people already are both, but ...) Just waiting to hear from Ed - who does great work from what I have seen and hopefully will see for myself. That's one nice 600 Overkill ! In discussion with Ed Plummer as to barrel length and such. He is taking care of other business at the moment so will probably get to my build in a few weeks or so. Thanks for the info Rob - much appreciated. Still struggling with the 22 1/2" barrel vs. the 26 decision. Ed sent me a picture of one of his latest 22 1/2" bbl beauties with a slimmed-down and angled forend with black tip - gorgeous. There are always 10Ga brass cases avalable. Rob, you are killing me man. A 10-gauge DR...(insert drooling idiot here), would you go with paradox-style screw-in chokes, or take the plunge and get Krieger/McGowen to build a couple rifled barrels? I'd go with rifled barrels. I'd just cut the shotgun tubes off in front of the block. Bore out each one and turn the barrels to fit. You can thread them or just solder them in place. Regulate and Re-use the original top and bottom ribs. Jeffe did something sinilar a few years ago and it worked out pretty well. I think he made a 550 flanged for it. Geaux for it! I had AHR make me two of them and they Work!...Also,go for the shorter barrel,handles much better and the beast on the other end wont know the differnce,I promise! I had 19 and 20" barrels and love them.Sold one and may sell "Thor" next when my 700AHR comes in next week ("Maximus")...The AHR folks are GREAT people! I hate when Christmas is delayed !!!  Just learned that the barrel supplier had a technical problem (rifling button broke) which has lead to a three week setback.  I just tell myself that "it's just a few extra weeks". Pac- Nor is a really good company and rifling buttons do break probably on a semi-regular basis. When they cut my 12GaFH barrel it took over 4 months and 12 tries. They sent me some of the broken buttons too. They really lost money on that deal but Chris never gave me lame excuses, just kept his quote and stuck with it. How many other companies do that? I tend to be a loyalist. Those who treat me well get my buisness over and over. Those who treat me poorly get to see my ass disappearing into the distance. The answer to your question is "Very few, anymore." When I was a roofer in the family business, that was our rule and practice. Like many family businesses, we relied on word of mouth and repeat customers. That meaant doing it right the first time and taking the lumps if the prices of materials went up after giving an estimate for the job. Breaking the rifling buttons is more common than you think, especially in the very large calibers. Tremendous force is needed to pull them through the bore. Lots of surface area to overcome. Pac-nor broke three or four on our first order of six 700 AHR barrels. I'm sure they lost their shirt, but never said a word. They make an excellent barrel and stand behind their product. | |||

Just spoke with Ed about my rifle and his boar hunt. Ed was hoping PacNor pulls the button today so that they will have barrels sometime next week. I'm hoping that happens. Sounds like he had a great time on his hunt - good food, great lodge and close to the airport. I am planning on taking my dad on this hunt for his 70th and Ed is working on something related to a big-bore (over .500) boar hunt. Heading to Las Vegas for a conference next week and planning to grab dinner with Robgunmaker and talk BB guns. So, all in all I am hoping I see my 600 before I get my bill from Uncle Sam on the 15th of April. Man, I just re-read that - an aweful lot of "hoping" going on ...
