Hello everyone,
just curious, what do think about some of
the names givin to some of the cartridges
developed over the last 50 years or so?
wildcats included.some are named
after famous people which is understandable,
but some others?
why none named after Teddy Roosevelt?
what do you think?

It's always seemed to me that the old time, non-caliber "names" given to rifle cartridges seem to fit and stick pretty well. .505 "Gibbs," .416 "Rigby," .500 "Jeffery," .404 "Jeffery," .375 "Holland & Holland," etc.

And then, of course, there are many named after the US rifle and ammunition manufacturers, such as the .458 "Winchester" Magnum, the .416 "Remington" Magnum, the .460 "Weatherby" Magnum, .500 "A-Square," and the .300 "Savage."

I think that most of the "new" rifle cartridges developed over the past fifty years fall into this category.

Then there are the relative newcomers, named after the wildcatters who popularized them, such as the .416 "Hoffman," the .416 "Taylor," the .458 "Lott," etc. I like these, as they are more homegrown and pay tribute to a real person.

On the other hand, the "name" elements of handgun cartridges seem to just fall by the wayside as often as not.

.38 "Special" (not "Smith & Wesson" Special), .44 or .357 Magnum (not "Remington" or "Smith & Wesson" Magnum), .45 Auto (not "Automatic Colt Pistol"), 9 Millimeter (not 9 mm "Luger" or "Parabellum"), etc.

The rather recently developed .357 SIG and .40 S&W are notable exceptions.

There are many more rifle cartridges using the same bullet diameter in common use than there are same bullet diameter pistol cartridges.

Maybe that's the reason.

As for what I think of them, well, I like the names of the old timers best, I think. Nostalgia is important! Cool

But in the end, I will choose the cartridge that's the most practical and effective every time -- regardless of the name.

It was very interesting when I took my 470 Mbogo to Africa on my Cape Buffalo hunt. When the guys we hunted with saw 470 Mbogo engraved on the barrel they all lit up with big smiles and walked off saying Mbogo, Mbogo.
Take care

its a matter of whim!

I have named one round after myself .. and its one that I don't use anymore .. the 257 JLS.

The Accurate Reloading lien was named after this site, and the members that helped me with them. the 416 and 458 are Obvious.

I did the 470 AccRel rather than 475, in homage to the 470 mbogo, NOT the 470 NE, though its a pass through

The 500 AccRel was named 500 in homage to the 500 Jeffery ...

The 550 Flanged was named flanged because it uses the 577/500 cases, and I thought the older style was cool, at that moment.

Neal named the 550 Magnum as there was nothing else to CALL it .. and we Called it the 550 express because 550 kurtz wasn't realistic!

mrlexma,i agree with you.i also like the ones
named after the old timers.
470 mbogo ,i have a keen intrest im your cartridge, but how in the hell did you come up
with the name?
jeffeosso, i can understand letting the members
of this site name a cartridge.
it is kind of wierd that some names just sound
so plain while others have a ring to them.
Rigby-take me hunting, rifles;H&H,Purdy-finest firearms to be had;Winchester,Remington,Ruger,Savage so mundane
Whelen,Lott,P.O.Ackley,Capstick-old timers who have been there done that.
Thanks for your responses

Some have names based on year of invention, bullet size, weight of bullet and charge.
The 404 is a wild one in terms of naming and naming the soon to be 404-375 had some debate.

There is also the English and American cart nomenclature of using a - or a /

Ease of understanding and case stanp has a lot to do with it.

Let's not forget hunting ground tributed like the 50 Alaskan.

A name can make or break a round.

Let's not forget the lazzeroni 470 Bibamofo

Hi Mark
I was heading on my first African Safari for Buffalo. Buffalo in Swahili is "Mbogo" and the cartridge I designed was .475 same as the 470 Nitro but the 470 rolls off better than 475.
Take care

boom stick,I prettymuch, kindasorta, forthemostpart have left the wildcatting about 15 years ago, except
for the 375 whelenAI. I saw the picture of your 404-375, I really like that, may even have to give
that a whirl. I wish you would reconsider the name though, it needs a name that says
"I CAN DO IT ALL"

Interesting. I shoot a Varminter, Roberts, Whelen, and a Taylor. While there are several bore sizes for some of those, the name is generally all I need to say. Only one a big bore, but they are so old that they are standards, no longer wildcats.
Never gave it much thought. Kind of like the names. Those early 22 calibers had intersting descriptive names, bee, hornet, wasp...
For the big girls, got to love the Mbogo, what a great name.

Sometimes it is vanity, sometimes you can't think of anything descriptive.

I ordered a reamer for a no-neck turn, but otherwise tight chamber forthe 6.5 Grendel.

6.5 lawndart. Maybe that is descriptive.
