Will theese make a .416 into a .458?
Meaning, will a 450 grs .416 cup-point at 2200 fps penetrate as deep and make as large a wound channel as a 450 grs .458 flat point at the same speed?

Thanks, Boom, for a good thread!
I have seen more impressive pics of the expanded cup-point than that, I guess at slower speed.

Bent,
the thing about these threads, and "making x into Y" (case of letters intended) overlooks the simple fact that if it is GREAT for making the 416 even better, then what does it do to apply exactly the same thing to the .458 and make it into the .485?

Like the guys that say they can get 2250 out of a 458 winmag. Hey, that's GREAT.. just let me know when you'll be at teh range, though.. anyway, if you applied that same loading discipline to the 458 lott case, it too would go faster than spec, as those same pressures.

In other words, what would happen if you took a 500gr .458 in the same bullet design and ran it 2300 fps?

Bigger hole?

Bent,

A copper 450 grain .416 would probably not be stable. Almost certainly it would not be, esp at such a low velocity and rotational velocity. Thats why Mike made a 370 grain instead.

I recovered the bullets and took photo posted by Boom Stick. (Thanks!)

Mike Brady kept his copper solids at around SD .300 because he wanted them stable.

Another of my pics. All SD .300 other than .474.

More or less..Technically probably not, but in the field shooting buffalo with both, I got that sort of an impression for what its worth...

I felt the 375 got upped to a .416 and the 416 to perhaps a 458, and that was on a number of buffalo, but it would probably take a hundred Buffalo to bear out that opine and even then it would still be assumption...

Personally, I believe the 350 gr. .375 and 450 gr. 416 Rem. bullets killed those bulls better than any bullets I had previously used in those two calibers on buffalo. Others may have a different experience..
