After having "sellers remorse" for a few years over the sale of a nifty Mod 600 Remington in 458X2" American I finally decided to do something about it! One possibility was to alter a 600 bolt and go that route but I ultimately decided to use a NIB Guide Rifle [673] instead. It came to roost at a VERY good price of 371.00 with a nice laminated stock. A call to Greg Tannel solved the stupid lock problem and today my Shilen barrel arrived. It`ll go on quick but the chambering is uo for grabs. I`ve got reamers and dies for the 2" and also reamers for the 2 1/4" variety and both will work through the 2.8 mag box of the 673 with the Speer 400 gr bullet crimped into the rear cannelure. I figure on 22" for barrel length asnd a nice NECG Front sight and a beautiful old German three leaf for the rear. As 150 yds is about as far as my old eyes will see I guess cut the sighta for, say, 50, 100 and 150. If I tire of the laminated stock I still have one of Mark Browns "Pounder" kevlar stocks to fall back on. This will make for a nice, light, quick pointing little rifle for the trees. And now to start having fun! Aloha, Mark When the fear of death is no longer a concern----the Rules of War change!!

The 458x2 is a fantastic little cartridge and I have always wanted one in a correctly-sized Mauser action. Perhaps someday I will run across one.

Why not use the 450 Marlin with available cases which obviously derives from the 458x2" ?

Here is mine 458X2" American: It's built on a Rem 700SPS WSM-action with a 18,5" Lothar Walther barrel. Short and light. Very handy in thick bush and steep terrain.

Another option being the 458Alpine an improved 458WSM. In a PF action however, having a belt to headspace on is kind of nice if any fireforming is required. Cheers... Con

Here's another option Ultra Mag Brass, cut the shoulder off with a bench cutter or grinder wheel, the heat will slightly anneal the brass as well, cut to at say.....2.2 inches, neck down to 458, one pass no mucking around, allow for slightly thicker walls, in the design You'll have a new case design, slightly longer then the 458 WSM and you will be able to set the case shoulder higher on this new design than a 458WSM, I'd think 8 to 10% better than a 458 WSM maybe more Actually the 458AR measurements at 2.25 instead of 2.55 would work just fine in a short action WSM rifle 458 AR Short regards S&F

The 458x2 is a great cartridge. I always thought it was a cleaver idea to be able to cut off any H&H belted brass and use it again. Seemed like a cheap way to go. Like everything else with this reloading and firearms my enjoyment comes from the time spent in the reloading room and on the bench trying to get the best group. I have learned to use premium bullets with this baby as she will drive them fast. Deer, mountain lion, and caribou have all fallen when she gets them in her sights. Samm of the USA

I decided on the 458X2 [or the 2 1/4"] for the main reason being: 1. Got the reamers 2. Got the dies 3. Got lots of old Mag brass to make cases from. 4. It`ll be a hoot to use as a backup for my XP,also a 458X2 American. Aloha, Mark When the fear of death is no longer a concern----the Rules of War change!!

I have a .458 X 2" AMERICAN built on an old Remington Model 722. Great Cartridge and almost identical to the .450 Marlin except for the belt. David
