To The Group:

After giving it some thought I am considering reboring my Ruger 375 H&H Express Magnum to the 470 Capstick or possibly the 470-404 improved. Yes I am aware of the 470 MBogo (no 416 rigby bolt on the ruger) and the 470 AR (I want to use the full action length of this large action). I am a little thrown off by the lack of .475 bullets out there. I have a few questions.

1.) What is the best way to form the 470 Capstick brass? (use hornady straight H&H mag cases...)

2. How fast can I shoot cast GC bullets in this rifle?

3. Does anyone have a source of reloading data? (I like IMR powders)

Thanks

Can only help on the cast question, with a good cast bullet sized for your throat/bore, good lube, figure 2200 fps should be no problem. Also to add, slower barrel twists tend to be more cast friendly, ie 1-12 or slower.

Another option is the 470 AR, but without trimming the brass back. I guess it would the 470 AR long neck.

I don't know that there are a lack of 470 bullets out there, all you need is one good soft and one good solid.

good one paul...long neck. it will be the 470 twin of the 404 jeffe.

jeffeosso...yawana make a drawing of that???

it should get the bullet out of the case and give about what 5% more case capacity???

yes yes it defeats the purpose of the original but its interesting none the less and would be easy, no?. it would fill a niche for those 300rum owners...

Re:470 Capstick

Is the only reason why the 470 Capstick was designed to use 500 grain bullets because, typically, 500 grains was the load used in the 470 NE? Are there any 600 gr. bullets out there for the .475 bores?

If there are, what type of velocity can be had from the Capstick case with 600 gr. bullets?

PaulH is absolutely correct ... you only need a good soft and solid and Woodleigh makes both. In Woodleigh you have a 480gr and 500gr ... and then there are the 0.475cal pistol projectiles from around 280gr through to 400gr. Need to get myself a cast bullet mould as mine has a 1:18" and I'd be interested to see how well it can do with cast.
In my Capstick I used 458Lott loading data to get me going.
Cheers...

Fred Z did a 470 ultracat, which is basically the 470x404 Imp.... would probably fall right in.

opening the boltface, seriously, with the cost of a rebore and chamber, is pretty much "nil",,, probably less than 5% of the cost.

"one good soft and one good solid"...

or a barnes TSX !!

capstick is a great round.. no flies on it, no complaints, when you start with such a large and long action as the RSM..

couple downs
rebore is expensive and has risk ... replacing the barrel would be disapointing

costs the ruger RSM is a realativily expensive "shelf" rifle... it's inherent cost (and value) is substantial.. reboring/barreling would probably decrease it's resale value.

you could buy a new ruger 77 mkII in 300 win (450), sights, barrel, chamber, blue, feeding for 650-700,

or sell your RSM (sorry) and build another (and lighter) rifle.

My favorite load is 84.0 grains IMR4064, F215 primer, and any 500 grain bullet.

so the long neck version would be roughly 10% more case volume than the lott or rem able to do 2450 fps. does that sound right???

rechamber yer lott and get another 150 fps Big Grin
