Modern loadings for the 10,75x68? Login/Join

The loadings listed for this old fellow are about 2200 for 347grs bullets, 1920's standards.

Does anybody have one, and loaded it with modern powders? I have seen 347grs bullets clocked at 2300 f/s, with a charge of 70 grs of Norma 202.

Anyone with other experiences, maybe with 400 grs bullets? The 380grs from North Fork should be exellent!

Thanks,

Alf,

Thank You very much!
May I inquire what publication this is taken from?

This is a real odd-ball cartridge from the factory loading aspect ... that it is actually factory loaded at all, with a 28 degree shoulder of only:

0.0135" step = [(0.480" shoulder) - (0.453 neck)]/2

Alf,

Thanks!

RIP,

Yea, but I tell you, on the factory made, unfired case I have in my collection, that shoulderangle does not look 28 degree! Like facyoryloaded .35 Whelens, they do not have a very distinct shoulder either.

Bent,
I am a recent convert to small shoulder approval.

I think the 10.75x68 is a great little powerhouse.

I would have one except that the .404 Dakota, .404 Jeffery and .427 Lapua Kifaru are all easier for me to deal with.

If the 10.75x68 would go in a lever action ... gunsmile

NOT my cup of tea, but it would be kind of cute in a '95.... that is the only leveraction I would ever consider to own and shoot...

I am now lining up what is required to start building a DGR in 10,75x68. I'll post some pic's when I am in the process!

Glad to see interest in the 10.75. My builder called yesterday to tell me he is presently contouring my barrel to include intregal front sight ramp, front sling swivel and rear sight island. I was lucky enough to find an original type B stock.

Great little cartridge, but for all the hassles involved (reamers/dies/cases) I'd rather download a 416Taylor for equal ballistics and accept one less cartridge in the magazine. When I had one I used 66gr AR2208 (Varget) with a 347gr Woodleigh to match the original ballistics. Never saw a need to hotrod it to 404J ballistics, but 63gr AR2208 with a 400gr Woodleigh did indeed get over 2100fps in a 24" barrel.
Cheers...

It is indeed a civilian MAS 36 sporter (carabine de chasse) in 10,75x68, made in 1948 still by MAS proper (where Jean Fournier was employed or consultant at the time). Express sight with one fixed and two flip-up blades, integral muzzle brake. Lightweight (3350 grams).

Carcano,

Please acept my apology for my comments about your new gun! From the pic, it is not a beauty, but might be a trassure anyway!
Hopefully, it will make you happy!

*Grin* From the photo and the overall condition of wood and lacquer, it might well have been the professional companion of a French colonist in Afrique Équatoriale...
but it might also have seen a more mundane and rural past as the hunting rifle of a Swiss peasant in Graubünden (where 10,2 mm is the legal minimum caliber). So, between elephant and chamois, much is conceivable Wink.

Seriously, the MAS 36 receiver configuration allows for excellently elegant and accurate custom rifles, but the potential is hardly appreciated. Please see here some photos of a beautiful Alsatian custom hunting rifle, built with discriminating yet reticent taste on a MAS-Fournier receiver (and no, it was not me):

Those sellers on Gunsamerica are sure to see their rifles sit safely on their gunracks. I have seen some MAS rifles sold in very good condition in Wisconsin for $ 150 or less. As a matter of fact, I found one for a good friend who collects military bolt action rifles for $ 150.

I know, I showed my rifle in a few other topic´s, but her is it once more. Big Grin

My load is the 347grs RNSN from woodleigh with 66grs. of Rottweil R902. I tested 300grs Degol, but the accuracy was terrible.

Carcano: That's actually a rather lovely MAS. Is that a crossbolt safety I see at the rear of the trigger guard? A little surprised the bolt wasn't reconfigured to a more conventional angle.

Oldshot, the owner of that one, can indeed be reasonably proud of his (partially commissioned) work. Austere, restrained, yet very elegant. Great taste !

I just shot my MAS-Fournier again today, with old Kynoch SP ammo (347 grains). The accuracy was rather stunning.

Bent Fossel,
Send me an email and I will forward quite a bit of my old loading data and the conversion of some of the European powders to USA powders..I built several 10.75x68s over the last few years and sold them here on AR.. I tried one on buffalo some years ago and was impressed..They make a nice light big bore that equals the original .404 Jefferys loadings, and they hold an extra round in the magazine of a std. action, and are easy to convert and make feed.

Horneber makes the brass and .423 bullets are easy to come by..The only down side that I can see is if Horneber ever quits makeing brass and that is a possibility with any of these old calibers. Another down side is the reamers are all a tad different and you end up having to fire form your brass in many cases. But these are sumountable problems for the avid handloader.

Be aware that the above listed loads by Alf from Rifle magazine as I recall are in some cases too hot for some rifles..I had some trouble with them in a couple of rifles so approach them with a 10% reduction and work up, but that is always good advise with any load.

Sweet SmilerI would be interested in this data also. Have collected 6bxs of Bertram brass. I know it's not Horneber, but Midway had it on closeout for about 2hrs for $25/bx and I could not resist. Waiting on Hornady to put .423 bullets on the market and, who knows Cool, maybe dies for the 10.75. Hornady does make more obscure calibers than the 10.75. Dave Kiff made the reamers used on my bbl, so if need be, I will get Dave at C&H to make up some dies.

I would be very careful with that Bertram brass It didn't fit the chamber of one of my rifles so brass required a little fire forming and the Bertram split every case..Not one failure with the Horneber in that rifle. worrisome at best.

I have had troublel with Bertram brass on more than a few ocassions except in the old black powder calibers.

Gentlemen

Here is the load data from Gerard:

Cal. 10.75x68 with .423" 320 grn HV bullet

Powder Start Load MAX FPS FPS / Inch
VV N130 57 2300 16
N202 61 2350 18

From Gerard:

The load data I have is below. We approach the presentation of load data differently to most others. The MAX FPS based on a 24" barrel and it is the speed one must not exceed after the number has been adjusted for barrel length with the FPS / Inch number.

Cheers,

André
