I got to talking with a friend about a rifle that I hate the caliber it is in. This rifle is a Winchester M70 XTR in 7mm Rem Mag. I really don't have any real money tied up in this rifle but I would like to do something with it so I might shoot it more. I just can't seem to warm up to the 7mm Mag.

I've been reading about the .376 Steyr that my friend suggested. I'm interested but want to hear what some other people think about it. I know my rifle is just a lowly push feed M70 but it is the only center fire Winchester I own and re-barreling it would be cheaper than buying a pre-64 .375 H&H.

375 ruger? you wont have to mess with the bolt.
the steyr is a short-ish round but better on recoil.

jeffeosso is pretty familiar with that round.

cheapest route is the 375 ruger.

Howdy,
the m70 with the .532 boltface would be a bit sloppy for the steyr's ~.500 boltface. It is basically 100FPS slower than a 375HH, for a given bullet weight and barrel length. It's a no brainer for a 30-06 or a mauser .. I am probalby about to build ANOTHER one...

the 375 ruger is a rebarrel away... you can send your rifle to itdcustom or pacnor, and they can install the barrel, chamber, headspace, crown, feeding and blue it for you quick

the steyr is a dream, but it IS less than a 375... the ruger is easy, and is more than a 375

Agree with everything Jeffe said except for some reason we all forget the 375-338. I know it has another name but let's call it the 375 Taylor for now. You'll get the velocity up enough to be in the 375 H&H class without the recoil of the 375 Ruger, if that's an issue.

And no feed-work to speak of, or chasing Steyr cases when Hornady makes a run. That said, I like the Steyr.

I cant think of anything much nicer( on my short list of neat rifle concepts) than a compact LargeRingIntermediate376Steyr-23". Id much rather carry that(or stdM98 9.3x64) around for 90+% of uses than the likes of a traditional lanky&lunky .375H&H-dropBoxMagnumLengthMauser.

So what is a ball park figure for the rebarrel as this has peaked my curiosity?

Thanks for the replys guys. I'll strongly consider the .375 Ruger as this definatly looks like the easiest route for me to go in a caliber larger than .338.

Is there a 9.3 beltless magnum I could do on this action as well? I'm really wanting a .375 but I want something different as well. I saw a .365 Magnum listed in Pacnor's chamber offerings but couldn't find any info.

Woodjack I really like your idea of the miniture .300 H&H you posted in the wildcat forum.

Another vote for the 375-338. I'm just finishing mine up now; got to get 'er done before Elk season. Mine was originally a 7mm Mag also, a completely worthless round.

DON´T get a ( silly, useless, out-of-fashion ) belted round!

I would have voted for the .376 Steyr ( 9.3 x 64 Brenneke case ) or the ( larger ) 8 x 68S case, in 6.5 or .30 ( some Austrian proprietary round ) or Original or necked up to .375 ...

But the Idea behind the .375 Ruger is hard to beat!

Maybe the .375 Ruger case necked down to whatever tickles your fancy? Stick with the original caliber and have only a rechambering done to create a new wildcat?

HAVE FUN!
