Here are some pictures of my 404. First of all it is built on a Savage 116 that was once a 300 RUM. I hated the cartridge and figured what the hell I will have a 404 built on it. Sent it to H&K gunshop in Forest Grove and had the work done. It has a Douglas barrel on it. I need to put sights on it, so if anyone knows of a good smith in my area that I could send it to to get sights put on please let me know. I know why a 404 on a savage and not a winchester or something else had the rifle and did it. I do have a couple of problems with it the main one everytime I shoot it the safety moves back. The other one is a quick fix a new trigger.

good stuff. are you sticking with that stock? how about something more "african" for a stock to match such a clasic african cartridge. how about a stock made out of african bubinga here is a link to some awesome wood and a great company, these guys are a classy outfit. nosler used them and the same wood on a special run they did. i hate to let the cat out of the bag on this one but i think more people should have a+ stocks on some realy great wood. http://www.cookwoods.com/

May I ask what's up with the scope mounts? It looks like they overhand the receiver both in the front and the back.

My dad put them on I need to flip the rear around. He said it got in the way when putting shells in? Thanks for reminding me I think will go do it right now. Please forgive my dad. I will just have to go sight it back in. I was surprised it is just a big push backwards nothing like ass kicking 300 calibers I have tangled with or the 375 Weatherby I once owned.

Personally I would get a new pair of bases that fits the gun. What you have is an extended front base wich you do not need, and I would want a rear base wich places the ring over the bridge. And, I would want them blued.
Your gunsmith should be able to trade the old ones for new ones and a small sum of money.

I am just tickled to see this.

great use of a savage, without the barrel nut, and in a great caliber.. a silk purse from a RUM's ear, so to speak

how does it feed?

on sights, how often do you use them? you should seriously think about the marbles #20, which is dirt cheap and willhold up pretty well

good job

The rifle feeds real well. I just need to fix the safety. Like I said they dang then comes back every time I shoot it. Hmmm maybe super glue it? I have know plans to change the stock I'm not out to impress anyone. Grew up on the reservation so I don't need anything fancy it will get the job done in that piece of wood but thanks for the site with all the wood. An elk isn't going to know the difference. as for sights I would probably use them more on this rifle if I had them cause everytime I shoot it that scope comes pretty darn close to my melon, M1 showed me a better way to shoot it off the bench and it helped but still to close for me. Already have a bad experience with heavy recoiling rifle broke my nose elk huntign one year with my 375 Weatherby shooting uphill at an elk yep you guessed it one hell of a nose bleed.

i dont like "fancy" stocks but good wood, checkering and an oil finish fits my bill quite well. i think a stock needs to be able to take abuse but clean it and re oil it and voila...the dings just add charecter thumb

I should have stated this rifle does not have any sights at all front or back. So I need to find someone to put some on. So again if anyone knows of one in my area please let me know.

Thanks for posting the pictures. I have a Savage 116BSAK in .300 RUM that I have been thinking of converting to .404. I will probably send to Pac-Nor and have them rebarrel it. It will be something to play with while I wait for the completion of my .404 being built on what originally was a Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in .300 RUM.

What contour is your barrel? Kreiger is doing a special contour for the Model 70 barrel that basically starts as a No. 5 and ends as a No. 6 at the muzzle. For the Savage I was thinking of using a No. 5 contour modified to be .725 diameter at the muzzle.

I wish I could answer the question on contour. I sent the rifle off back in Dec 02 it was done when I got back from Iraq. It has been so long I think it is a #4 but don't hold me to that.

I think that is a great rifle!

Kudos to you for doing it.

There is a great Savage gunsmith out in Oregon. He makes and sells the "sharpshooter" trigger. He advertises in The Varmint Hunter magazine. Call the magazine. they will get you in touch with him. don't worry about all the hi-faluting guns you see here. We buy them because we are old and have some money to waste. Take that gun to Africa and hunt it at your young age. boink as many "clean" girls as you can in the next twenty years. Don't waste your money on a nice house, car or wife.
Good on ya!

o.k. here is what you do...take HER new 05 mustang out for a drive one day by yourself and get in an accident. make sure you total it then claim amnesia. after getting to re know her again tell her you dont love her and cant see why you ever did then before you got into the debt of a car for her and a new house give her the pink slip and grounds for divorce would be irreconcilable differences. spend the next 15 years hunting and backpacking the world over. after that claim your memory came back and you cant live without her clap roflmao clap roflmao clap roflmao clap roflmao
