I cannot say for sure until Gerard and I have fireformed brass to measure the gross water capacity of these cases, and it will depend on the brass used.

Some H&H cases have greater internal capacity than others, etc.

H&H, Rigby, Lapua, they should all be good for 63,800 PSI.

Ballpark water capacities:

.395 GSC: 110 grains
398 LM: 120 grains
.395 Tatanka: 130 grains

The .395 Tatanka on full length Rigby brass with 20 degree shoulder might be called a "Forty-Ought-Seven" or 40-07.
30-06 to 40-07 only took 101 years.

Congratulations on the .395, I think it is the most magnificent bore diameter ever! And this is coming from a fellow who thinks that at least for my scope, there have been no useful or even very interesting chamberings since 1912! But the .395 is it !

The Tatanka is surely the best, but my preference is the .395 GSC.

I thought I would mention that I recently checked the case capacities of some trimmed H&H W-W, R-P, ELD, and PMP brass. This was done by pouring five cases each full of ball powder, striking level, then weighing the powder. W-W, R-P, and ELD all held about the same amount but the PMP held 2 grains less. This may have something to do with the surprisingly high velocity I reported here

I read that Norma H&H brass is even more voluminous than W-W or R-P.

John in SC likes the .395 GSC. Hooray! It is sure to be with us forever now.
And any .395 load I start with is bound to be a starting load.

You are so right. I have found the Norma made .375 Wby brass to hold about 112 grains of water at 2.860" length while some other brass formed into .375 Wby will only hold 108 grains of H2O for 2.860" length, etc. And brass of the same brand can vary from lot to lot, etc.

I'm seriously a big fan of the .395. I ordered a custom rifle last June that is the culmination of nearly 20 years of trying to decide if a custom was worth the extra cost over a factory rifle. For the longest time ".416 or .375?" was the question. So of course I think the .395 is perfection. Perfectly suitable for absolutely anything in one easy to manage package. Perfection.

The Cartridge Master List at AmmoGuide.com lists a ".416 Tatanka" which is a .404 Jeffery necked to .416 with shoulder moved forward by .196". No other changes of significance. It is by Bo Kromann Nielsen (Max), from comments there. Yep, that makes the .416 Tatanka very similar to the .416 Dakota.

The .395 Tatanka is similarly retro too, being a full length .416 Rigby necked down to .395 with 20 degree shoulder. Should be a really slick feeder in any action suitable for a .416 Rigby. Simply a .338 Lapua Magnum lengthened to 2.900" brass length and necked up to .395.

I used the Cartridge Creator tool there to draw the .395 Tatanka "Forty-Ought-Seven." We'll see if the drawing shows up on the Cartridge Master List in a few days.

The "T" word:

2600 fps and 2700 fps require a 1: 12.3" twist by the realguns.com twist calculator, for the 1.90" long .395/340gr SP.

At 2800 fps, the calculated twist slows to 1: 14.8" for the same bullet. Just like that, at 2800 fps the Greenhill formula makes a fudge factor adjustment for increased velocity at the 2800 fps mark. Really precise, eh?

The 12" twist barrels selected for these rifles might require that we stick to 2600 to 2700 fps for 1000 yard accuracy with these SP bullets from GSC. Even at 2600 fps, the SP's are supersonic well past 1000 yds.

the 395 ruger should be on par woth the 395 gsc loaded long...you should be able to feed sp's from the mag...it will be great for thumping with flat nose bullets for elephants and hv's for the rest the sp's will be good for 1000 yards but only about 800 of them supersonic from my guestimations...but i think you are reffering to rabbi rip on the "great one" thing

Lakota or "Teton Sioux" word for bull bison is "tatanka." Cow bison is "pte."

The Lakota call me "Cante Mato" (chahn-tay mah-toh) or "Care Bear" (Bear Heart, Teddy bear with picture of heart on chest, etc.). Not "the great one." Just Care Bear who cares about .395 Tatanka "Forty-Double-Ought-Seven."
