Here are two low res pics of the 550 express (left) and my 500 jeffe (right)

both of which are truthfully works in progress

here are the hires links to both... i won't bog everyone down with posting them directly

550-500

550-500

i just finished putting the ebony on the 550 this morning... what a pain in the rump.

550
wood - nice piece of plain quartersawn turkish, that fla3006 gave me. it is VERY loosly patterned from a boyds jrs classic, with a heathy does of dakota. dakota for the perchbelly

needs recoil lugs installed.. ..heck, i just now finished the ebony and sanding with a quick coat of tung oil.

the mag is a highly modified parker hall bottom metal with a jeffe-made coffin box floorplate. it holds 3 down and loads the top one, from a single stack.

action vz 24 mauser!!

front sight, necg
rear - intregal island and barrel lug, made by me, with a cz 375 1-standing, 2 folding.

barrel - bauska
barrel band ... ruger take off

the 500 is an enfield with a 3 post mod 70 style safety, what once was a gag english stalker, VERY extended timney trigger, pacnor barrel, necg front and rear sights, bottom metal is a straightened 1917, mag is a "ends turned around" enfield sheet metal box.

and it FINIALLY z$@##'ING FEEDS PERFECT

pads on both are baby bumper pach. f-990

all work done by me...

hope you like em

Jeff, Looks great. What is the weight of the 550 in the new stock? I like the stock shape a lot. Good thickness thru the wrist and a solid place to grip the forend but not too much. Classy looking rifle. Really first class work. thumb The ebony tip sets it off really nicely. Can't wait for November. Cool Big bore shooters paradise.

I really like the stock on the 550 Express. The slimmer, longer forearm seems to flow much better into the barrel. I also think that the cheekpiece size fits the butt size really well.

Mix,
if i happen to have them, i cut down 3/8 stainless bolts... if not, i use 3/8 all thread (this ALWAYS seems to be handy in my shop)...

i "cheat" with this, as I start my pilot hole just at or just above where the tang hits the bottom (back) and "aim" for the center of the wrist/grip cap.... i then follow up with a 3/8 drill... probably should use a 7/16, but i don't usually have one handy... inject steel bed into the hole (can just use a long qtip/cotton swap to get on the bottom) roll the allthread in the steel bed... make sure i have the whole thing covered, then take about 10 mins of the ole "how's your father" to work the pin in and get past all the trapped air..

i also crossbolt the front action lug, and use a "tied down" that LOOKS like the cz, but it isn't on a slide, on the barrel mounted lug.

on boomers (.416 and bigger) i also wait at LEAST 4 full days, and want a week, before i shoot them, to allow the bedding to fully cure..

there should be NO NO NO NO NO contact with the rear tang VERTICALLY and the stock... that is, the bottom should be 98% down, the last 2% as well as the back, should NOT touch... it will crack the stock... period...

won't hurt the stock, but it will make a crack or a divit

Frank
thanks alot... it's thicker than 'stock' but not hugely... and the barrel is, at the thinest, .950!!!!

Ever used the 550 express as a bolt action shotgun? Could be a sweet light package built on a winchester WSM action.

thumbdownBoonie, a rifled shotgun is no good past about 6-7 feet. As the rifling will spin the shot load and scatter the shot and quickly.

Been there and done that with my Lott. The 550 will not be much if any better. My Lott failed good performance with 1 oz. loads, think .410+ but with nearly twoce the shot load.
