Has a Rimles 444 been done?
I was thinking why not turn any 308 based gun into a rimless 444. Use 444 dies but it would need a new reamer to headspace on the mouth but hey...

Use these 405 grain WLN bullets for 45-70 power but at a .310 SD vs .276 SD in the 45-70

This would be neet in a sub 6 lb gun

Can anyone help out with Quickload and a 2.8" oal with 405 grain bullet and 55k PSI?

Hmmm...now all it needs is a cool name Big Grin

Yes - a guy in Germany did it and he wasn't the first...

This one is just the 06 case chopped to 2.25" stuffed with 444 or 44 bullets. No belt, mouth headspace like the 450 bushmaster. Designed for short actions.

Neck down the 17 remington Smiler

or how about a 15 Hornet... that should be good for 3,000 fps.

Headspacing on the case mouth is generally considered a very bad idea in large bore rifles. Eventually you'll wind up not trimming a case exactly to the defined length and forcing the case mouth and seated bullet into the throat.Particularily in lever guns you may not feel it as it happens. i'e' the dreaded Jam fit! A KaBOOM can result. In fact that has been one of the prime reasons for rifle blow-ups that I have recorded. This idea comes up every now and then and we always advise to let it die. Figure out a more reliable way to headspace.-rob

boomie.. the 444 is a rimmed 30-06 case...

iirc, the 44 automag is a shortened 3006 or 308 case to 44...

waste of time, just a big pistol round

boom stick,
Ken Howell has done this and called it a 429Express from hazy memory, using the full-length 30/06 case.

I can't remember his name but there's a 'smith in the States I corresponded with awhile back that did 308 and 30/06 length conversions and claimed success. Trimming correctly is the key if headspacing is off the mouth, no chamfering the edges either.

I tried making some 44/08 dummies ... wasn't easy.
Cheers...

I was thinking 2.225" like the 444 and long flat nose bullets to use the 2.8" oal.
Yes there are full length ones but I thought why not 444 length to use the dies and have more powder room than the 308 case... Just use 06 cases. I am curious to see how fast quickload says 300 grainers would go.
Yes proper trim length check every time.
I was thinking at 55k psi it should duplicate the 45-70 or the 405 Win in power.
