When introduced, it blew America away, as the most powerful cartridge of its time. Not even the the big ones, like .45-120-550 Sharps could match the .405 near or far. It was considered a long range cartridge, and at 150 yards it is well within the range of what most game are hunted at today. With a zero at 100 yards, it is 0.4" high at 50 and 3.1" low at 150 - 9.5" low at 200 yards, but I guess that is streching it, energy-wise. Today, it can be had in a cartridge that fits in a short Rem 700 with a .308-class boltface. .240 Wea'by cases cut to 2.170, .405 Win reamer, cut belt in chamber by hand in lathe. .405 Win dies, cut of at right lenght. Original .405 Win bullets. Heh, I just had to make one up... Here next to the .358 Win and .350 RemMag. Considering that the .358 Win will give 2400+ fps with a 250 grs bullet, I will say it is safe to believe the .405 Belted Express will give 2200+ with the 300 grs bullet, just like the original .405 Winchester. Ain't it cute! Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

Without the caption I would have said it looks like a 458 Win Mag next to a short 416 on a RUM case & a short 416 Wby. Hmmm, I likeee Steve

It sounds like the .411 KDF, which will launch 300grs.@2200fps, and 400grs.@2100fps. George

It's unfair Bent, you show the 358 and 350 quite tarnished, while your creature is shining like gold!

The 405 Win will push the 300gr Hornady and 300gr Barnes X over 2400fps, I've verified it personally over a chrony. http://www.gunblast.com/Ruger_No1_405.htm

George, The .411 KDF is a necked down .416 Taylor with no other changes, and by so is a much larger and more powerful cartridge. The one I made up is made on the .240 Wea'by case, made to fit a short action like Rem 700 and duplicate original .405 Win numbers. Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

Bent, I understood that. I was just applying a frame of reference. Did you consider using .30-06 brass instead of the .240Wby. brass? After all, the .240Wby. case is just about the .30-06 case necked down with a belt added. George

George, Yes, I did, as I have ordered a .400 Whelen reamer with the original .458" shoulder, but that would require more expensive dies. The - in my eyes - grand idea with this one, is that one can use original reamer and dies - just shorten the dies and cut the slot for the belt in chamber by hand. Like the original .405, it is not a preferred cartridge against the biggest of Africa, but a super woods cartridge against anything in the US. Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

Just crank the pressure up in a ENCORE or Bolt action to 65KPSI with the original rimmed .405 win and lengthen the throat 0.25. Mine will easily do 2250 fps with a 410gr woodleigh. A couple of years ago, I brought mine to a STC hunt. Wonderful numbers which shows that my .425 Fossdal have quite a potential!! At same preassures, same volume, maybe 2300 with a 400 grs .423? Crazy numbers, 2150 is all I ask for, and probably more sound preassure for hot climate.
heh, so I guess I will not bring it over, but he can borrow my reamer any time! Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

As I recall, the judge had his Win Mod 95 405 worked over with a long throat and some feeding changes and got 2100 plus with a 400 gr. bullet, now thats pretty close to a buffalo gun IMO...I would love to have one.
