Rich,

Tom McCoy here. Your an animal. That would not only be the hammer of Thor on an elephant but it would probably do the number on a jackrabbit during one of our winter extravaganzas! Could you post a picture of one of those handsome slugs after crushing a few bags of sand? Would love to see them.

Welcome aboard Tom.

For the rest of you, Tom is the guy who does the absolutely best recoil dissipating/reducing pad system money can buy!! If his cost $300 and any other one I wanted was free...I am sadly reaching for my wallet. Really, though, I an glad to do that; since another brand might not have kept my shoulder safe thru all this abuse. I have had rotator cuff surgery twice on my right shoulder. Each time was a year off from shooting, even a 22rf. All the 505 and 550 Gibbs test work was done wearing his strap-on system with the exception of one or two rounds to double check the effectiveness. Nearly 140 rounds to date. I do not shoot anything with any whomph power without it.

I'd sure like to see pic's and details on Tom McCoy's recoil arresting system.

Anything that would make bench-work with the 470 Mbogo and 500 A2 more enjoyable has my interest.

Cheers,
Canuck

Try Rich's 505 Gibbs from the bench a half dozen times, then I'd be interested to hear what you liken it to. Wink Smiler

BTW, you have an open invite to come shoot my 500 A2 anytime you like too. In fact, if you shoot it from the bench with no recoil protection (PAST Magnum pad IS allowed though), you can shoot it as many times as you want/can. thumb

Since bench-resting these mo-fuggas is a necessity for load development, and I like to know what the rifle/load combo is truly capable of, I am not so proud as to try and make myself do it all without some serious protection.

I liken the recoil protection to "Whiplash, Detached Retina, and Monster Flinch Avoidance Tactic".

Cheers,
Canuck

A 25 pound bag of shot between your shoulder and the rifle works very well.. thumb

boomie,

I should have been more clear....My comments were good natured...just trying to make the point that benching these beasts (w/o a muzzle brake expecially), especially trying to be accurate, is very little fun...I know you like recoil, but I also know you haven't benched anything bigger than your 45/70. I am sure you will concur once you have. Smiler I wasn't trying to belittle your opinion, just providing my POV.

Now, shooting these things from your hind legs, on the other hand, is more like surfing, and is a load of fun. Taming that experience is more like your example of "tow-in surfing".

Cheers,
Canuck

Howdy,

Canuck, You can see a custom youth version of our recoil shield at http://larryrivers.com/ferns_brownbear.htm

It's the pictures of the 10 year old girl who dumped an 11'7" brownie from the prone with 375 H&H (270 gr TSX's full speed ahead if I recall correctly) These are the same pictures that were all over the net about a year ago.

My shields are about the same size and shape as a PAST but weigh a couple of ounces more. Most are slightly under a pound with the heavy duty shield in place. We have a version that was designed expressly for shooting heavies off the bench. If you would like to arrange a test drive please feel free to give me a call at (509) 697-4196 or on my cell (509) 969-3073.

We are trying to get the website updated in the next week or so and will try to get video clips of Rich sending some of those handsome Macifej 558's down range at 2,400 fps. Oh what fun!!!! That was a great treat for me to shoot that one as I am typically limited to nasty little 8.5 to 9 Lb 458's. Bon Appetite

As a novice, I have found the .505 Gibbs info on this thread very interesting and useful for my reloading attempts.

Not sure if the picture will appear below as desired (the process is too complicated for this dummy), but these are bullets I have either used on game or can buy in South Africa. Macifej's product looks great and one day I'll get some too!

The top row are made by some friends in Pretoria, South Africa, under the brand name 'Dzombo'. From left: 550gr; 570gr; 600gr. I find the 600gr extends too far into the case, limiting the powder to a max of about 131gr of S385 (made by Somchem, South Africa - roughly similar to IMR4831). However, this gives around 2200fps which, for elephant, is perfect. They sell at Rand 12.50 (about $1.80 or so)

The game rangers in Kruger National Park favour these flat nose Dzombo bullets, in all calibres, above all else, I am told. I will only get to try them on animals next hunting season.

Bottom row: 525gr Kynoch (c.1960's); 600gr Barnes (1980); 600gr Woodleigh.

I have owned my .505 for 30 years (it was built by Gibbs in 1927/8) and even with original Kynoch ammo, 50/60 years old and using the 525gr bullets, I have had amazing examples of penetration and killing power. These new bullets just have to upgrade that performance even more!

Anyone have any idea of the 'collectors' value of original .505 ammo, sealed in soldered tin boxes, 10 cartridges per box?

Richard.

Charles_Helm,

You are a star! Thanks a ton for that. I managed to get the pic onto 'Hunting Reports - Africa; How to post pictures' while doing a test run earlier today. Then Microsoft sent me an "Update for Internet Explorer" and that seems to have changed things. Guess it's back to school for me.

Just be sure that when you copy the IMG code in the little box on the Photobucket page you get the whole thing and it should work just fine.

I updated Internet Explorer and it would not load the Microsoft Update page any more. That is one of the reasons I use Firefox!

Macifej,

This is a youth version of the shield that Rich was using with his 505. I don't have any still photos of Rich, only video that I'm working on getting formatted for posting. In short, just showing the shield in use.

By the way, that is an 11'7" bear, a 10 year old girl, and a 375 Holland. If anyone is interested in seeing more pictures and reading the story you can go to www.larryrivers.com/fern.htm She also whacked an 8'2" Arctic grizzly last fall.

Point: this kid shot a 375H&H wearing the recoil system TMC builds. How much easier can you say it works!!!

I keep mine in the truck so I do not (like American Express) leave home without it.

I'm not sure I want to know. But, in the interests of science I will check.

Yes, 150gr will fit, and fill the case about 1/8" up into the neck.
Now that you know, I suppose you would like me to load and chronograph one or two rounds...strictly in the interests of science, of course...

Over the weekend, if it does not snow too much!

In the interest of safety I suggest you invite someone from the local office of the DNC to do the test under the guise of a "photo op".

Seriously Rich! Be careful with that!

Sounds like a compressed load to me.....
