I exchanged emails with Dave Corbin about sizing down 300 grain 44 Mag (.429) to .423 for some plinking loads for the 404 Jeffery. He didn't see any reason why it couldn't be done.

Any one here already done this? If so, what brand of bullets do you use? Recipe?

Or perhaps your own plinking loads for the 404 Jeffery?

Your input is greatly appreciated.

I'm sure you could size them down, but I am looking at the Hawk bullets in .423" as I have been very happy with them in my .360 bpe double rifle. They make a 300 grain offering for the .404

skb,
Thanks, I just put in an order for 2 boxes. Still looking for an economical way to get some 300 grain bullets.

Rusty: Have Dave ( a very nice fellow) or his brother Richard Corbin (google RCE) make you a .423 draw die and you should be in business. Drawing .429 bullets down to .423 would be a snap.

Rusty, I have swedged down hundreds of .429 bullets to .423 for shooting in my 10.75 Mauser. .44mag pistol bullets and half jacketed cast bullets. Dave at C&H made the die for me and it works like a charm using my Rock Chucker. I have been going to the range every Saturday morning preparing for my trip to Moz. I'll shoot a doz of the swedged bullets and 5 or 6 full loads off hand, sitting, sticks, etc. I have found H4895 to be a good choice for full and practice loads. If the 400gr AFrames at 2150fps bounce off buff, I'll have the rifle rechambered to .404 Wink Bob

Rusty, The cast half jacket bullets were made by a friend in VT, a fellow 10.75 shooter. I also swedge .429 Speers. I will check the part number this evening and get back to you. Bob

Guys: Not trying to be a butthead, but you swage up (use pressure to increase diameter) and draw down (use pressure to decrease diameter).
That said, I would think both Speers and Hornadys would be good candidates for drawing down to .423.

Rusty, have you considered cast bullets? Several companies are now making cast for the 404.

VFR1,
Thanks for the offer. I've sent Dave Corbin bullets and a check for a draw die.

Jeffe,
I was just trying to work a load that wouldn't be too rough on that injured shoulder of yours! Big Grin

It seems the question has been answered with the drawing down of 429 to 423 for a plinking load but in mine I use a cast bullet of 350gn in either 90/10 ww/lino over 63gn H4350 for 1900 and excellent accuracy. Cast in lino over the same load it is even more accurate but in lino over 74gn Varget I get 2365 and it is at the top end for plinking. I HT the 90/10 bullet and over 87gn H4350 I was getting 2416. The cast bullet is from a Hoch mould to my design and is the GC and lubed one in this line-up.
