With today's powders in a strong Farquharson action, how long should 500 NE
brass be to fire 475 and 510 grain .510" diameter CEB bullets? Of course NO
filler should be used, and we want muzzle velocity of 2300 FPS. How does 2.5"
length sound? Chamber can always be lengthened to convert the rifle to the
standard 500 NE length if so desired in the future.

D/R Hunter

Correct bullet placement, combined with the required depth of bullet penetration, results in an anchored animal...

I see the problem being the CIP 41,000 PSI case. Maybe just seat deeper if needed.

The load filled the case up to the base of the bullet with no compression.

I later spent a total of eleven weeks in Africa with the rifle, where it accounted for a respectable number of thick skinned game.

Nice.

That is pretty close to a 500 Acc Rel. With a faster powder you could probably have done 2300-2400 fps.

thank you.

That reference to the thread had some nice stories and pix.

I'm glad that the 505 SRE worked out well. My son and I expect the same from the 500 AccRel Nyati. We plan on a 1.6-5 scope (with 5" eyerelief), so it will be 10 lbs rather than 9. McGowen is doing the barrel this month.

We only plan to use the 500 AccRel Nyati on buffalo (nyati), no 'ele' and no 'nosehorn'. Oh, it will work on plains game, too. It needs to be accurate for a longish shot on an impala or oribi. We all have our ways of enjoying the African bush.

the 500 AccRel and the 505 Empire, as well as the 550 express.. the former being a rigby case, the later two being belt rigby/weatherby, are between 128 and 138 gr h20 capacity .. and are likely in the 55,000-60,000 psi ranged, basis the actual lab testing Neal had done on the 550s ..

high pressure and double rifles, at least classic and made from shotgun actions, should not go together.

however, a ruger single shot, there you can excel.

since you are changing the pressure parameter, you would likely wish to make it NOT FIT into a 500 NE.. some how..

if that wasn't a concern, and you are using a strong action, your choices boil down to
1: use filler and load to higher pressure in an existing case
2: create custom reamers, dies, load data, and have stronger brass made.

if you wish to fool around, i would suggest getting a ruger rebarreled to 500 NE and work out SAFE new load data.

my 45/120 nitro is an example of doing this approach.
