Just like very few Dodge's and Plymouths actually had the hemi. But that didn't stop Chrysler corp from building a 40 year mystique around them.

The rat motor chevy was the most popular, do everything big bore of all time: powered drag cars, sports cars, boats and heavy duty trucks. And they're still doing so.

The hemi only went fast in a straight line. I think they were probably good boat anchors too. Where are those 392's and 426's now? In show cars that get pushed out of and then winched back in their trailers. And don't tell me they're sitting in dragsters...those are specialized aftermarket engines from Keith Black or Ed Pink or whoever. Certainly not mopar parts.

Jeffe,

As far as I remember and can verify on the internet there was NEVER a factory Shelby Cobra delivered with either the 427 SOHC FE engine or the 429 Boss SOHC engine.

Holman and Moody modified a few to contain the 427 SOHC FE engine and several originals and replicas (including Jay Leno's) have been fitted with the big engine.

The original was fitted either with the 427 Side Oiler FE engine or the 428 Cobra Jet engine. Still plenty potent (read completely un-house-broken and outrageous).

The advent of stroked small blocks has actually made the Cobra design much friendlier handling while retaining the blinding quickness of the big block. Drop a couple of hundred pounds ... move the weight center back and down ... and you have an almost survivable ride!

Nonetheless, the Cobra is still a car what will allow your ego to kill you. It is damned squirrelly under hard acceleration.

Don't the 68 Hemi Darts and Baracudas still rule the superstock class today?
I saw a sweet 69 red and black hemi charger in Santa Cruz today
Love the sound a hemi makes.
I'd love a uber rare 67 dart 383 Or the rare 69 GSS 440 Dart. Aim and fire... No turns. Big blocks on compacts... Gotta love it.

A hell of a lot more hemis (street hemis) made it on the street in production vehicles than cammers (in fact, I don't think any made it in a real production vehicle) and no, they weren't just good in a straight line (even though the current top fuel motors are still based very closely on the original and the heads, etc, will bolt onto a production hemi block and vice versa and they even share the same bore spacing), but they dominated NASCAR before they were restricted to the point of ineffectiveness.

Yes they do -- to this date.

Sadly enough, this is true.

I had built a 64 1/2 Mustang that had coil over suspension from Bud Moores' special Ford Trans-Am racing points suspension map. Built by Spectre Racing in Belmont, CA.

Things I missed:
Their Boss 320 stroked 302, built by Falconer and Dunn in LA, for 5k. Could have sold the 4 weber duals and the manifold for what it cost to built a 335 horse .60 over 289...

A REAL wrecked GT 40 for 20 grand...

I said that just for a quick funny. My boss bought a 70 Challenger with a 440. Had a suspension like a marshmellow, and, it was only good in a straight line. I think he saw Vanishing Point...

Anyway, scared the heck out of him, and, he went back to a VW Disel Truck.

His brother had a 1100cc bike that did 0-60 in 2.1, and, would yank the front wheel off the ground, from 0-60 in first gear, and, in 5th, at 140...

Those were the days....

Should also mention that got rides in a REAL 289 Cobra, in the rain. A REAL nightmare. Junk suspension, also good in pretty much nothing but a straight line, or, on perfectly smooth tracks.

The 427 had a MUCH better suspension, and, it came with the side oiler. You want SOHCs, talk to Dan Gurney. I considered this engine for my mustang, and, should have done it...

Yes, the Mustang IS a brick, and, it would run into a wall at about 140, that required either better design, or a ton more horsepower...

Why doesn't anyone mention Sunbeam Tigers? A REALLY fun car to drive, and, a great combination of small, and light...
