The 416 Rigby has an excellent reputation, however I don't think that the cartridge is known as a "stopper" ie. stopping a charge. For that, larger diameter rounds are generally accepted as being preferred. Having said that, the 416 seems to be a very versatile round, having long range as well as DG capabilities. Stopping cartridges seem to be rather specialized in purpose and hence lack the versatility of the 416 Rigby. Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. ScottS A charge stopper is any rifle powerfull enough to disrupt the CNS from a frontal shot, or shots,putting him down, or turns the animal, in effect stopping the charge. With Elephant,most heavy rounds to the face will usually turn the animal, giveing you time to place a heart/lung shot, when he turns. With Buffalo, or lion, the job is far more critical, because if you don't hit the CNS, they will usually not stop, or turn. PHC, said it best! "Once a Buffalo puts together a conscentrated charge, your options have been wounderfully simplified! You kill him, or he will kill you!" In that case notheing short of scrambleing his brain, and/or spine, will for sure stop him.
Peter is correct on the 416 Rigby being a very versitile cartridge in the right rifle, and the fact that most only consider stoppers as larger than the .416! I don't neccessarily agree with that concept, because, the only place a stopper is needed is in a close charge, and in that sittuation, even a very large bullet, that misses the CNS, is not as good as a smaller one that hits the CNS. With either one, if the CNS is missed, the animal will not be stopped. On the bottom end, we need a bullet that will stay together, and pennetrate deeply enough to get to the CNS, the rest is up to the shooter. I, personally, start at.400 caliber, and go up from there, and my personal favorite is the 500NE, in a double rifle. However, the 375H&H, and even the 9.3 bullets of good consrution, with a CNS shot will drop anything in it's tracks. The benefit gained by larger bullets, can't be denied, especially with Ele, because a close to the brain shot has the ability to stunn the ele, long enough to give the shooter a chance to place a finisher, and it will break bigger bones, that may put the animal down, that a smaller one might not. So, generally, the so-called "STOPPERS" begine at .400 cal, and go up from there. IMO, there is a top limit as well!
