Look what followed me home today.... or, Jeffe, can I attend a big bore shoot now?

GeedubyaLook what followed me home today.... or, Jeffe, can I attend a big bore shoot now?
I have 9.3 x 62, 375 H&H 45-70 and 450 Marlin, but somehow there remained an itch that just had to be scratched.
Finally scratched that itch this evening. Found a good deal on a Ruger #1 Tropical stainless laminate. The guy who had it shot it exactly 8 times. I got the box of hornady 500 grain FMJ/RN with the 12 remaining bullets with the deal. Guy said (with emphasis) he really had no use for them.
Now I can come to one of Jeffe's big bore shoots and get a displaced shoulder and a detached retina and be one of the guys.

I'm thinking of down loading it with some 400 gr. speers and taking it to the lease next weekend and see if I can't turn a porker inside out.

GeedubyaIt is a 458 Lott. Don't know why I didn't put that in the original post. Maybe because I was getting my marchin' orders from my darlin' bride concerning dinner.

I think the "Whompers Club" starts at 200 Ft. Lbs. of recoil

mstarlingSee:
http://forums.accuratereloadin...1043/m/545106238/p/1Starts at .458 Lott, but you have to be standing after the target goes down.
Was curious as to how much free recoil the #1 would have in a .458 Lott ... which is why I ask for the weight. Just an estimate that in an 8 pound rifle the recoil might be as high as 87+ ft/lbs ... is hefty!

Very exclusive! (and just maybe a little silly!)

Would just have to make a 3.5 lb Lott to get 200 Ft. Lbs of recoil

carbon fiber wrapped barrel, titanium action and bolt, kevlar stock. I wonder how light a 458 Lott can get

Just having fun =)

bigdoggy700I have an ultra lite 458 lott from Bijou creek at 5.5 lbs, its a kicker!!!!
21 November 2009, 09:45
jackgutharyGood looking gun!
The .458 Lott is a hoot to shoot, and the # 1 is a fine rifle, I'd say you did good, pardner!
21 November 2009, 09:46
bigdoggy700Sorry, meant 5.18 lbs. 5.5 lbs would be way to heavy. I guess you can tell I have been trading with Tom again.

GeedubyaBeing the "pussy" that I am, I will start out with Hog Killers plinkin' load till I can get a decelerator pad on.
I plan to load up a few today and maybe mount a scope. Hopefully I'll take it to the lease with me this weekend and see if I can't pop a hog with it. If I do I will take some pix and report back.

RustyWy I'm sure even Will would think that 458 LOTT in that Ruger would not be too heavy for it's caliber. I know he would want to shoot it!

jetdrvrWe old men have to stick to our little .458 Wins with 62 Ft/lbs. Ain't no way I'd go for 200 with my back...

RIPWhenever you get ready, that is an easy re-chamber to "450 NE 3-1/4 Inch Thin Rim."
You are flirting with disaster if your single shot is not chambered for a flanged cartridge.
I have one just like yours and had it rechambered (Pronto!)to 450 NE, the granddaddy of all Nitro Express standards,
as of 1898.
I think the latest make of LimbSaver slip-on pads work well on that one, if you need a little extra LOP.
The new LimbSavers do not melt in the safe.
The leather Galco or Pachmayr slip-ons with velcro pastening are great too.
You can even add some extra rubber inside one of those.
The rubber Pachmayr Decelerator slip-on is excellent also.

ovnySo strong is the decrease of 458 Lott?. I still have not tried my Ceska in that caliber but I would like you to produce a retinal detachment

Hog KillerOvny, enjoy your Lott. It will NOT harm you from the recoil, it is only in the 74 ft lb range.
Retinal detachment caused from recoil is a myth. Bad genetics/nearsighted people are the only ones that MIGHT have this problem.
