Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has entered the building!

The King of the Five Hundreds speaks:

"Pete Cardona, thank you, thank you very much."
"Dave Estergaard, send Rip a PM."

Rip here: Peter made this brass from Hornady .416 Rigby basic. It only measures 2.940", but the neck can grow to give 3.000" Max length.
I'll probably never have to trim to 2.990". thumb

Excellent! Have you got ahold of Dave? I'm sure he'll be tickled with the news!
It'll give him a reason to build another wolloper.

beautiful.
My crush on the 470 Mbogo is waning just looking at those cases.

Beats a 500 Jeffery too, AND no confusion over brass bastardization issues. Wink

Big Daddy Dave Estergaard has been informed that his offspring has a brother ... maybe some of Ol' Dave's wild oats, but I have adopted it.
It is a family tradition, going back to my ancestors having adopted Abraham Lincoln's mother who was sired by a Berry boy.

No Jeff Foxworthy jokes please. Wink

Redding might have the reloading dies ready by the end of the year.

Until then I can make do by overworking a few cases with 470 Mbogo dies as a sizer-decapper, and 500 Jeffery dies as a decapper, expander, neck sizer, and crimper. Then fireform to sharpen the shoulder.

Ample shoulder, eh?
Not all 500 Jeffery stuff is useless. Big Grin

Too bad it won't clean up a 500 A-Square chamber. Frowner

Canuck,
Cut off .415" of the pesky belt end of the 500 A2 chamber and it will clean up all the way through the throat. Make it 1/2" setback and you are way into virgin territory.

I have a Ruger No.1 in 500 A2 that is wanting to become a 500 Mbogo. That will be easy.

The 500Mbogo is bigger than the 500A2 above the belt, a wee bit longer (0.1" longer with full grown brass), and no mini-rebate either.

The 500 Mbogo Neck-1 and Neck-2 diameters are .532", whereas the 500A2 is .537" and .536".
The 500A2 neck is only .393" long so the neck slop goes away too with that .415" setback.

Base to shoulder of 500 Mbogo: 2.480"
Base to shoulder of 500A2: 2.485"

500A2 freebore length is .400" long, so that goes away too with the .415" setback. 500 Mbogo free bore is .500" long and .511" diameter.

The 500 mbogo has a bigger diameter everywhere else above the 500A2 belt. 500 Mbogo shoulder diameter is .572", 500A2 is .568", for brass max.

500 Mbogo reamer min. diameters are .535" for neck and .575" for shoulder.

Both have a 35-degree shoulder angle, just like the 470 Mbogo.

Take the 470 Mbogo and give it the neck and shoulder dimensions above, and grow it from 2.945" to 3.000" (500A2 is 2.900"): Simple as that. Very near caliber-length neck (.492" brass max, and .500" reamer min. neck length).

With newborn brass at 2.940" length, the brass neck is .432" long, still beats 500A2 and 500 Jeffery neck length.

Pretend like I just handed you a cigar. thumb

My knowledge on rechambering with a set-back is lacking. My concern is with sights, etc. Would one have to set it back a complete revolution of the barrel, and then what are the odds of them not being perfect and requiring additional monkeying, and is this a big deal? And how badly would this mess up the wood-metal fit in the barrel channel?

I would only be out the re-chambering work, a new set of dies and some brass...could be worth it to adopt another member of the Mbogo family into my safe.

Chris,
while you could probably shoot the 500 in the a2 chamber, your A2 WILL require a barrel setback and more than just rechambering...

if you like your stock, a new barrel would be the fastest way ... its a "Depends" .. do you like your stock or barrel better, or, if it's a synthetic, you can just rebed and fill after the barrel is cut back and rechambered.

Right RIP?

jeffeosso,
If brass and chambers are in spec, you won't be able to chamber a 500 Mbogo cartridge in a 500A2 rifle. I would try it, but I am worried about "scrapping" a belt on the 500 Mbogo brass, compressing the full length of the case body, squeezing the shoulder down, and pinching the case mouth into the bullet at the end of the 500A2 chamber. Might be possible with a mallet, not a cricket mallet, but a little 4-pound sledge might do it.

398 Lapua dies have arrived on schedule.
500 Mbogo dies from Redding should be here before 2009, just to keep it "Fifty Aught Eight." Cool
