Which would you take?
Okay, here is the question of the day.

Your good friend is going to Africa to hunt buffalo and lion. He asks you go go along as a guest and asks you to bring a back up rifle. You only have two guns. A Chapuis 9.3X74 double and a Marlin stainless guide gun. The Chapuis is loaded with 286 Woodleighs, softs and solids. The Marlin is loaded with 400 grain Barnes Buster bullets. Which would you take? No substitutions please.

Whichever one is heavier, so you can throw it at ol MBOGO(to confuse him) and give you guys time to run away. Neither is what I'd want as a back-up gun personally.-Rob

Remember Dave, you don't have to run faster than the Cape buffalo, just faster than your good friend.

Tough one but I think I'd go with the Guide Gun - I like .458 caliber holes in DG better than .366.

If I'm just along for the ride and perhaps to shoot a bait animal or two, I'd take the 9.3x74.

If I'm being asked to act as backup in case his buffalo or lion charge, I'd buy a proper rifle even if I had to sell the other two.

Is this "back up rifle" as in a spare rifle or back up in case of a charge. For the former I'd take the Chapuis and the Marlin for the latter.

The Guide Gun? What velocity?

The 9,3x74R = 375 H&H +/-.

I am a double fan, so Boom-Boom! I guess.

I would rather take my Searcy 470 NE though

I'm interested in everyones opion is on this one because I'm completely ignorant on African game.
But my knee jerk answer would have been the Guide Gun.

So you can back him up.

As much as the heart says the 9.3 Double, I would go the guide gun
being 458 cal and that you are backing up.

The other question is - which do you shoot better. Always a consideration.

I'm thinking the back-up gun is in case the primary falters for some reason. I would probably take the 9.3. But definitely take the one that you can shoot best.

I would recommend the 9,3x74R.

Research my previous posts. Mine has performed very well in Zimbabwe, taking all manner of game ncluding giraffe, cape buff and an elephant at 5 yards.

Can the bullets be substituted? Whatever you pick may I suggest you read if you have not the terminal bullet performance thread. Maybe load the BBW #13 non cons backed up with a solid. Bullet choice over cart and diameter. Most of all enjoy the hunt and good luck!

I've got two .45-70 Guide guns and I've got a couple 9.3x62. With the .45-70 think "big handgun cartridge" with the 9,3 think "95% of a .375H&H".

My vote would be for the 9,3.

I'm afraid I concur with the fella above who said "neither".

A "backup" isn't normally required to shoot, even at DG, unless things have already gone wrong. That is no time for a "somewhat" adequate rifle. For African DG, I consider both the 9.3 x62 and the 9.3x74R marginal when things are squeeky tight. And I consider the .45-70 even more so. I'd either get a fully adequate rifle for wounded DG, or forget being a backup. A travelling companion, yes, a back-up, no.
