i like the idea of the 416 or 404 on the 375 ultra case...stronger than the 404 original case, cheaper brass and i think a relatively easy conversion. from what i can see it needs a new barrel, headspacing recoil lug and maybe a little slicking up, am i wrong? is this a $1,500 404 with more velocity? is this a 416 with moderate preasure?

I don't now that the 375 RUM case is any stronger. When I section them my 404 Jeffery Norma cases have thicker walls than my 375 RUM cases.

the 404 and the rum are close enough to be, at least considered, the same basic case. Yes, there's some difference, but let's just talk about fruit, not apples and oranges.

if you did it on the rum, you would have a 416 dakota...

great round, and it's a bit bigger than a 416 rem, so it could have a bit lower pressure.

boom stick,
I have a .404 Jeffery and a .416 Dakota each built on a Model 70 Winchester action from .300 RUM rifles.

That's the way to go. You don't want a rebated rim to any degree if it can be avoided, unless you just want to screw around with necking up .375 RUM brass. If so, then have fun. shame

I just built a .404 Jeffrey using a push feed Model 70 action (please no flack, I couldn't get a CRF action cheap). I have Norma and BELL Jeffrey brass and Remington .375 RUM cases reformed. I have the basic rifle right now with no sights on the barrel and using an old BalVar8 scope that came with the rifle. The .375 RUM cases fireform beautifully leaving a case that is almost exactly 1 M/M short. They tell me that the RWS brass is only 72 M/M vice 73 M/M for the Norma and BELL brass. I haven't altered the magazine rails yet and it will feed the .404's with a little extra push. I think that opening them a few thousanth's and polishing them will have them feeding flaulessly. I did not have to open the bolt face at all for the BELL and Norma cases, they fit just fine although .007" larger than the RUM and 300 WM cases. My CH dies made the RUM's shootinable without any effort. I simply resized the RUM's in the sizer die and ran them into the expander die (lubed properly). I didn't lose a one and after fireforming, they look great. I won't use them for DG hunting but for load workup and practice, they're fine. By the way, this rifle started life as .300 WINMAG and I replaced the magazine box with a Winchester .375 box and it accomodates the .404 just fine and will hold three rounds plus one in the chamber. I am going to replace the follower with a .375 follower before I do any mag rail work.
