The latest issue of Rifle Shooter has an article I am told wherein John Sundra is necking the .375 Ruger up to .416 and has dobbed his moniker on it as the .416 JRS, as per some of his earlier "wildcats"... Several of us have already built up some 416/375 Rugers, but don't know what they are naming them.. I have had mine completed for about a year in the white with a old Mauser stock on it..It presently has a just finished custom stock and the metal is at the bluers...I will checker it as soon as my eyes heal up and hair over from an operation or I will get it checkered by some skilled tech.. I will name mine the .416 Ruger..I think that is more appropo than naming it after myself, as they designed the case...and I suspect it will become a factory round in the future.. It has a lot of possibilities, and will be a great round and mine holds a tad more water than my .416 Remington, but the difference will be miniscule....It will just be a 416 Rem in somewhat shorter case without a belt, for whatever that is worth which ain't much IMO... All that said, it will be a heck of a nice gun when I am finished and I like this stock so well that I probably won't build a 404 JRS anytime soon as I planned. Wildcat claim jumping...I dubbed the 411 version the "400 Pondoro" as in Taylor...since he wont be building one I will have to in his honor. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

Alf, Agreed. The .375 Weatherby has a little bit bigger case capacity than the .375 Ruger. I know this absolutely. The .375 Ruger is shorter, its only advantage. Same applies to the .416 Ruger versus .416 Remington. boomer, ".400 Pondoro" was taken long ago (1992), using a .410-caliber bullet on a 2.810" .375 H&H case necked up. See Mr. Bruce Woods' picture in the A-Square manual, for heck sake!

It would seem the 416AR is the best substitute for the longer 416 Rem like the Lott and Capstick... 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

Yea, verily, the .375 Ruger has much to recommend it, and it shall surely be with us as long as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west: no rebate, no belt, perfect for the standard length (medium) action, enough case capacity for any practical use, and only about a buck per case of finest quality Hornady brass.

I've got a little piece of advice for all of you .416 Ruger wildcatters. You might just want to cool your jets. A little bird told me that there "might" not be any reason to go through the expense and trouble of wild catting this round in the near future.

I have been assured by Ruger bosses that the .416 Ruger is in the future, that is no secret, and that is precisly why I built one...Mine will be a 98 Mauser, the holy grail of big bores IMO... If I sell the .416 Ruger then I will delve back into the wildcatting clan and do a 404 Ruger and that one will probably never adourn the shelves of our larger sporting goods stores! jamison actually invented something.. the 2" improved 404 case, and made a line, from top to bottom.... would one be foolish enough to think that hornady hasn't written patent/copyright paper up and down from their unique case dimensions? opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Alf, it is my understanding that there was no court decision, rather Winchester and Jamison agreed to a settlement. A friend and former patient of mine is a patent lawyer. That is exactly what some people do - she calls them "patent trolls" because they try to get broad protection on a simple concept, then sit under the bridge and wait for someone to infringe. Once the product / idea is to market, they pop up and try to exact royalties.

Mine is labeled 416-375 Ruger....very simple! I wouldn't have dreamed of naming it after me as the idea was seen by everyone and his uncle immediately after the .375 Ruger came out. Sundra....Kiss my ass! Mine is built on a persian Mauser '98 action and #5 contour 23" Douglas barrel It uses 83 grains of H-414 to push 400 grain Horndys at 2,400'/sec. Necked to anything from .308 to .423 this case is asgood as it gets and as much as anyone needs! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." ...... As I remember Jon Sundra wildcatted the 300 RUM case to 375 , took it to Africa and shot a hippo with it before Remington unvieled the 375 RUM .. I don,t remember hearing about any copyright infringement issues or problems with patenting it .... I would hope Ruger and Hornady had [ pre wildcatted ] , designed and developed about every bore size they may have had any future interest in before they let a totally new case onto the market .... Too bad all the soap opera stuff has to follow along with people wildcatting or making brass. .... .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

If Sundra wants to name a caliber anything, I could care less, I sure have better things to do than worry about who names a cartridge what..I named mine the .416 Ruger for lack of a better name, and I believe I built the first one, maybe.....I started it before it could be made by using a 375 Ruger reamer and a .416 neck, Dennis Olson did the metal work..I just got some brass and still have no dies, but they are on order and the stock is finished except for checkering and a final rub down with rotten stone and oil... I think it is a great .416 option and easy to build...afterthought is I wish it was a 404 Ruger, but perhaps thats another project??????????. I read the article a couple of times. He did not officially name the new cartridge. He just used his name for grins and NOT as a patent. He even admits that Ruger will probably come out with it under the name 416 Ruger. I think folks are jumping to conclusions before actually reading the article. It is not surprising though considereing the Jamison fiasco. I think whole Jamison/Winchester deal was bad for everybody no matter who was right. RH

I think this 416 JRS is to dig up an old dog actually. My friend Tom ("Bisonland"), from Wyoming, have done this along time ago. But on a 35 Newton case. Or to be more concise; a 400 Newton. He is one of the highest fan of Newtons rifles, and calibres. The 375 Ruger is simply a 375 Newton! But my friend does'ent bother to put his own name on it, and he is not a employed writer either, so he did not have that opportunity to shout it out loud. I believe Bisonland have mentioned this, fere on this forum before. It is a nice round though, almost a beltless Taylor. *Treat problems like a dog; Take a sniff ..... If it can't be killed, eaten, or fucked? Just pie on it, and walk on!:-) Arild.

......No doubt this subject is best left well alone , But , as per common sense and Jeffoso,s post I,m sure Hornady patented the case in .416 before they ever released the 375 Ruger ...... Obviously they did with the 338 RCM and the 300 RCM ...There is probably even a 270 version and 243 version of the RCM already done up and waiting to be relesed .......I would actually prefer a .411 Ruger . They can use the 400 gr bullets from the 450/400 and the 300 gr bullet from the 405 Winchester ......It would be pretty hard to beat that combo for the people who arn,t too pinky finger to hunt with Hornady bullets and factory ammo .... JMHO .. .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....
