Prof,
if it were me, and i was very happy with the 375, I would do the 458, from a practicality POV.. the 470 because it's cool! no one at the range has a 470 gun... and I had a 470 sized bore missing!!
Perfect reasoning!

I'll tell you how the 400gr speer pistol bullets do on hogs in about 2 weeks.
Wow! A 475 diameter bullet with the possibility of "blowup" from velocity extremes!

Sounds like fun!!

SnapperJeffe,
Saw several nice rifles this week that may work for a 470AR. Which do you think would work the best?
Weatherby Vanguard 300 win mag for $400
Ruger 77 7mag for $350
Remington 7 mag for $350
I'm leaning towards the Remington and also found a 8 mag Classic for $500 that looked good.
Can you post phone numbers for the barrel makers so I can get that ordered.
Thanks,
Snapper

jeffeossoSnapper,
Myself, I would do the ruger!!! way way too easy a project
http://www.pac-nor.comhere's the link to pacnor..
for most people, a pacnor 5 may be way too light, a 6 is good.. mine's a 4
have it prethreaded, and we'll get you with Tom to knock her out.

400 gr is 1.295 long
and quickload says I can hit 2500+ with it...
and yeah, i just shortened them in my lathe...

MJinesOkay Jeffe, enough excuses, where are the pics?
The rifle looked good with a roughed out stock and the need for a serious bluing bath, so I really want to see how the tricked out bad boy looks.

Sounds like the pistol bullets will make for some fun shooting and did a first class job for first blood.
Congrats,

the 400gr load is 2300fps.. nice and mild
Hmmm, BS.... let me make it really easy....
call pacnor... order a pre-threaded #6 profile stainless barrel, prethreaded for a ruger....
it will be 12 weeks before they bill your credit card...
thats 20 bucks a week, or bring your lunch to work for those 12 weeks...
meanwhile, sell your 45/70
buy a ruger stainless
and let's get er done!!
But asking someone to do a stainless one, to "give[you] a visual" is asking someone to spend their ~850 bucks before you spend yours... just aint right

Mike,
is that $400 on top of the heym you offered to swap me for?!?!?!

Hope you guys had a successfull Hog Hunt. I am wishing now I had thought more clearly on the offer to have Mike bring my rifle back. I am two payments away from paying off my custom 338 and then the .470 awaits.

boom stickMan...not a lot of sympathy around here...

tomorrow i will call pacnor and order a stainless 475 barrel... i want it to be heavy and 22" long.(please no bad jokes...the wife is verrrry happy with my "package") any suggestions?
the only question still is blr or ruger...hmmmm

what is the smithing diff. cost wise???
from my understanding the ruger would be easiest right?
22 March 2006, 07:31
Hog KillerRuger, MkII. It will handle the recoil much better than a blr. Get the extra 2"s,(24") it is the easiest way to add weight, and that is your best friend in this class of weapon.
Now get'r done.

Good advice, and should the extra 2" be a problem you can have it cut and recrowned -- can't go the other way.
22 March 2006, 08:01
invader66The above advice is indeed sound. Remember,Jeff,
Hog Killer and I have fired this round. Not talking down, we are here. Get the stuff to Jeff and we will photo every step and post it and send you the photos. We may even have a Get-together to honor the event and post it to. You will love the rifle, I GATROONTEE!!!!!!

22 March 2006, 21:15
Charles_HelmBS -- enjoy your birthday and related beverage. Feel free to don the smoking jacket/bath robe with your drinks but pictures are not required.
I'll let Jeffe answer the taper question, since I do not know the best approach for balancing it.
Good luck with the project.
