ALL BOOKED UPWe have an abundance of hogs on our deer lease-small place (approx 600 ac)
and under the terms of our contract, we are offering hog hunts on a limited basis
in February, March, and April. The ranch is in LaSalle County, about 1.5
hours south of San Antonio, TX.

We are NOT an outfitter, but just the lease members trying to crop the hog
herd. What you will get is a very good opportunity to shoot 2 hogs apiece,
hunting from elevated blinds over feeders (2 per blind) and we will scatter
corn on the roads as well if you wish. During the recently concluded deer
season, we typically saw 20 to 30 hogs per evening hunt, and about half that
many in the morning hunts. There are a number of large (175-200 lb) boars
around, and lots of eating size pigs. Only thing that is off-limits are the
sows with piglets and javalinas. The specifics are: 2 hunter, 2 day
minimum, 2 hog limit at $75 per hunter per day ($300 total for the 2 days).
You can provide your own sleeping accommodations (camper) or for parties of
2 or less, use our "rustic" (and I mean primitive) camphouse which does have
toilet and shower. You'll have to bring ice chests and ice for the meat as
our walk-in is down for maintenance. I'll field dress your kills for an
additional $25 per animal. You also provide your own food and drinks.
Nearest store is about 7 miles away but it has less on its shelves than the
typical 7-11. Nearest motel is in Cotulla, about 20 miles away.

Here is a pic of one of our former resident boars.

And to be brief, we had an excellent time.

First Mike made the arraingements with Allen, sent a deposit, and all communications were clear, prompt, accurate, and NOT any attempt to over sellt he place. In short, Allen acted (and now IS) a trusted friend and gentleman who was opening his favorite lease to a very few number of a people.

We all worked the schedule for us to arrive before departure time for the evening Hunt on friday. The rules of the place are simple, you are here to hunt hogs, do not shoot wet sows, and take them cleanly. The last is self-reinforcing due to the local flora .... when someone says that they had a bumper crop of "pear apples" what they have stated it that they have a thicket of prickley pears....

Allen and Mike (lease holders) were gentlemen of the first rank. Excellent people to be with.

Remember, this place isn't a petting zoo... in fact, any animal at all that you run into there you probably wouldn'y enjoy the petting!! .. The hogs were definately present, but not as in a gamefarm situation... the place is 3/4 low/cattle fenced.... Dustoffer can correct me, but I believe the rear high fence actually belongs to the ranch behind.

Anyway, the 470 AR with the speer pistol bullets, acted like the Hammer of Thor... bang, flop, twitch!! 148# boar... backstraps went from hanging to grill in about 90 seconds!!

Sleeping it seriously for 2 hunters, only, or sleep about 20 mins up the road in town.

People were warm and professional... in short, Dustoffer, you done good!!

thanks
Jeffe

jeffe--thanks for the kind words and for your efforts at reducing the hog population. Maybe you are overstating the cactus a bit?---NOT!

And, the .470 did good too!

Jeffe,

Shhh...don't tell anybody what a good time we had they will all want in on it next time.

Allen Rhodes (Dustoffer) is a class act. The bunk house is comfortable...the fire pit and bbq great...the ranch is just the right size...I had plenty of shooting opportunities...took home lots of cactus thorns.

Had great time...best couple of days I had spent in awhile.

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Mabey I should plan on going, particulary if the prickly pears are in season as well...

Jeffe,
I have to agree with you 100% on your assessment of Alan's hospitality. My father, brother-in-law, and I just returned from our excursion into south Texas. As it was the first time we have ever hunted somewhere besides public land here in AZ. We didn't know what to expect.
Everything was perfect! (even the fleas) We killed a total of 5 hogs ranging from 90 lbs to 160 something. Saw tons of deer, quail, a few bobcats, and even an armadillo. Allen was super helpful and worked very hard to make our hunt enjoyable and successful. I now have about a year's worth of pork in the freezer!
Hats off to you Allen. I hope we can come back sometime next year.
I type this just minutes after finishing my first Texas pork roast!

Thanks again Allen!
