Sorry Grenadier I was not responding to your post. I was responding to the use of any copper or copper alloy bullets as a major wear factor in a large bore rifle. The Norma and Hornady bullets are sporting bullets. The Hornady FMJs were mostly designed for big bore rifles. Wearing out a big bore does no seem to be a problem for anyone but the original poster.

shootaway I might have my major disagreements with Michael but BS is not one of them and you of all people accusing someone else of Bullshit really is the pot calling the kettle black !!! And learn to write English. Previously 500N with many thousands of posts !

Something I find interesting Michael is that even after firing those OVERSIZED STEEL bullets down the barrel, the rifling looks intact and crisp with sharp edges. So much for the theory that a barrel is only good for 50 rounds or so with incessant intermediate cleaning between sessions, eh? I'm expecting a very nice Searcy 500NE to be hitting the used market soon. I predict it will be sold due to the barrels being shot out and therefore only capable of 1" regulation between the barrels at 50 yards. Off hand, it will probably shoot more like a shotgun using oversized turkey loads in an Improved Cylinder choke! I'll be more than happy to give it a nice home for used and worn out double rifles. It can sit right next to my other "ruined" barreled doubles! By the way, looks like a steel bullet is just the ticket for cleaning brass fouling!!

Really ? I think quite a few in this thread reckon you are full of BS. "A sighting in tip for open sight rifles". Nearly every person in the above thread called you out on sighting in as being wrong in a major way yet you continue to give "advice" to people who asked on that thread even though it was wrong advice. I reckon you must be one of those indignant French Canadians who can't seem to go with the flow and always want to cause trouble. Previously 500N with many thousands of posts !

Ha, that takes the cake considering you put up a rifle target that looked like it had been hit with a shotgun. If you are going to accuse people of not being able to shoot, at least be able to shot well yourself - ie if you want to talk the walk make sure you can walk the walk. Shootaway, your stupidity is borderline legendary. Let me ask you this in complete sincerity: Do you have any academic understanding of metallurgy, mechanics, physics? Do you understand the chain of events that occurs when you pull the trigger and fire a cartridge? "Molotov Cocktails don't leave fingerprints" -Dr. Ski

Michael That is a great new innovation that needs to be patented! How to get rid of brass barrel fouling? Shoot steel bullets! Look at the proof in the grooves on the bullets Was that you or Sam? Just kidding!

Naki Busted! Damn... I love the CLEANING aspect of this whole thing..... After all, I ain't much for cleaning big bore rifles, just don't require it you see. But after several thousand brass and copper solids, I reckon a few steel bullets to clean it out is a pretty good idea to me! HEH HEH............ I remember once being in Alaska on a moose hunt. Had a nice 1885 45/70 single shot on that hunt. After about 5 days of being in the rain/snow continuous my hunting partner just happened to look at the muzzle of the rifle and it was totally coating in rust. Looking at the bore, it was totally coated in rust as well. "Oh my God" he stated, eyes wide, "You better get a cleaning rod and clean that bore", to which I flatly stated "Hell No, soon as I shoot a moose, that bore will be clean again, one bullet down the bore will clean it out!"........ Which in a day or so, came true, clean as a whistle! No need wasting time on such......... http://www.b-mriflesandcartridges.com/default.html The New Word is "Non-Conventional", add "Conventional" to the Endangered Species List! With the size of those pellets, I'm thinking George has a pretty good Goose Gun there. Certainly adequate for Turkeys. I'm just not sure those birds need buckshot to take them down however. #2's and 4's have always worked for me.

It's an old myth that barrels "erode". Actually the damage is from the heat of combustion. The study was done years ago ,a proper metallurgical study ,showing that the barrel absorbed carbon when hot from combustion .In the subsequent heating and cooling the steel developed cracks. If you really want wear and erosion then look for abrasives such as sand getting on the cartridges and in the barrel.Shoot on a dusty sandy range ? Seen any worn out carbide sizing dies ? It's from the sand . Remember sand is an abrasive as in sandpaper ! Maybe some of you middle east service veterans can give us some stories like how fast a sand storm can screw up equipment !!
