In reality, for straightwalled cases, you don't need much taper at all. The .600 OK which is derived from the .577NE without a rim ( uses a belt) has nearly no taper and yet extracts perfectly aven with 58Kpsi loads.-Rob

Although this is a little off of this thread I have always wondered why the 600 JDJ was ever developed? I do not understand what advantages it offers over the 600 NE or frankly even the 577 NE, on which it is based.

SSK makes a big deal of offering this chambering on their website and especially in the Ruger #1.

I guess that I must be missing something here....

The .600 NE will not fit into a Ruger No. 1, hence the .600 JDJ cartridge which will fit into a Ruger No. 1.

500grains,

OK, so that is the reason. I see that the 600 NE has a nominally 0.05" larger rim diameter than the 577 NE.

Talk about a solution in search of a problem....

Thanks.

Don,
it's not the rim that matters, it's the casehead (lagest diameter of the base just infront of the rim. iirc, the barrel shank is 1" on those, and .050 can be a contraindicating factor.

in this case .048 difference.. or about the same from a 404 to a 470 bullet...

rim's don't really meany anything in this case

Yes- The Ruger barrel shank is just shy of enough meat for a .600NE. Ol JDJ didn't want it to blow up so he created the .577NE based case. The rim size does not matter here.-Rob
