Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

So Soudy finally did it. I am pretty sure it was his quest. Congratulation to him on a dream come true.

Soudy Golabchi had the old record shot in 2003 - 68" X 67.5". The above photo is larger and must have been shot more recently. Surprising that the horn tips are so pointedand not broomed off. Must be the angle of growth prevented them from rubbing on the ground or the rocks when grazing.

I would be really interested in getting more info.

I found this one shot in 2008. Not sure if it the same sheep. The top facebook photo might have been cleaned up and posed.

This particular sheep was actually taken by Yura (Yuri) Matison himself. Soudy couldn't make it over on short notice and Yura was worried she sheep would die. He said the sheep had literally no teeth and was not in prime condition to make it through a Tajikistan winter.

Does this mean that the 75" sheep shot by Youri is not registered with SCI & Soudy's sheep is SCI No.1 (SCI registered?)

Yuri kept the biggest for himself but did not enter into SCI records! Big Grin

NO! I think a top outfitter would not survive in business if he was seen as a private guide and not treating all clients with the same degree of professionalism.

What is Soudy's background? Is he a relative of Jamsheed Rasheed or Prince Abdolreza? I cannot find much public info about him except his obsession for sheep hunting.

The fact that he has 5 of the top 10 could just mean that he has a great passion for MP Sheep and that he hunts them more often. Similar to his Mongolian hunts and getting a snow leopard permit!

I just looked at the web page for the company. They claim all sheep the same price regardless of size. I would love to be able to afford a hunt for MP. Bruce

The second annual Ovis was presented on January 25, 2003. The recipient was Hossein Golabchi of Augusta, Georgia, better known by his nickname of Soudy. Soudy Golabchi was born in Iran, but emigrated to the U.S. as a young man. He is the owner of the highly successful Golmar Construction and Development Co. of Augusta. His achievements in business and his community are numerous. Soudy began hunting in Iran when he was 16 years old. He says that he has taken more sheep in his home country than he even cares to count, as he was initially not actually a trophy hunter. That came later, after he became an American citizen in 1980. Since that time he has trophy hunted worldwide, including several times in his homeland of Iran. Soudy has taken 65 wild sheep and 34 wild goats. This does not count all the Iranian sheep he took as a young man. These include 25 different Capra (wild goat) species/subspecies, and 35 different Ovis (wild sheep) species/subspecies. He has three Grand Slams, and needs only one more ram to have a fourth Grand Slam. Around 1990, Soudy became enamored with hunting the Marco Polo in Tajikistan. Since then, he has made 16 trips to the mighty Pamir Mountains. Amazingly, of the 11 or 12 Marco Polos he has taken, seven have broken the magic 60-inch mark. Back in his home state of Georgia, for several years Soudy has been involved in trying to educate young people about wildlife conservation. He has a museum and trophy room which contain well over 400 wild animals of the world, representing over 225 different species. Here he conducts training sessions for interested young people. Soudy is truly a conservationist. Over the last couple of years he has worked extensively with GSCO and SCI to try to upgrade trophy classifications. He had been interested in this for some time, and readily accepted when asked to help out with this important work. He headed up the committee for Iran’s trophy classification but has worked with all the other sheep and goats as well. Yes, Soudy is a trophy hunter, and a tremendous conservationist. He is a most deserving recipient of the second annual Ovis.

I love to read stories like this; unbelievable ram.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR.

It can range from under $20,000 in Kyrgyzstan to $40,000+ in Tajikistan. Unfortunately, the price paid for the hunt plus bribes often determines the size of the ram. Not always but often.

As of today Top 20 SCI entries for Marco Polo are all from Tajikistan, hence the higher price.

"Additional" bonuses will always put you on bigger rams...that is the sad truth.

Kyrgyzstan is half the price....although "Additional" bonuses there will also get you more inches.
