Jumbos keep people on tenterhooks

Statesman News Service
RAYAGADA, May 13: The wild tuskers, which had gone on rampage in Rayagada and Gajapati districts killing five persons and destroying properties and houses, have kept people here on tenterhooks.
The elephants, which had moved out of Lakhani sanctuary in Mohan block of Gajapati, had over the past fortnight moved to the adjoining areas of Pudamppur and Godai panchayats of Rayagada district and had gone to Gajapati and now returned to Gunupur, spreading panic in the area.
The forest official pointed out that elephants had a tendency to return along their path of entry so they have started sensitising people on the possible return journey of the herd.
There are reports that the herd of elephant killed a buffalo and destroyed the cashew nut and banana gardens. The elephant are using the road passing through Alat and Narsinghamunda and reached at Trukanignda via Kapilpur.
The forest department and the police administration warned the people against going outside homes. People allege that forest authorities and police had failed to protect their life and property.
The panic-stricken people though worried about the havoc created by the elephants, more than 500 people, including tribals, with drums, fire bowls and crackers are trying their best to scare away the elephants from the area.

I think the word is tenderhook, means Anxious, not knowing whats going to happen next.

This is British English spoken in India.

Tenterhook is correct. These were the hooks on the frames used to stretch wool.
