Believe me, nobody’s laughing.

What’s out here, outside of U.S. borders, is more a mixture of apprehension, concern, a bit of dread mixed with sadness that it’s come to this.

The world in general bears no issue with the American people as a whole, only with the bizarre scenario in which a tired old man is being pitted against an incendiary demagogue. To paraphrase the psychopath in the contest, “Nobody’s ever seen anything like it”, at least since 1934.

I use canola oil
I use a house made dredge:

2 cups of corn mill
1cup of flour
Seasoned w black pepper, sea salt, dried thyme, paprika, cayenne pepper, ground coriander

Dredge, egg wash, back in flour, to the rack.

I use one of those Dutch overs with a fry basket.

Sea salt a little when pulled (about 2-3 minutes of frying). I slice lemons and squeeze over the ones I eat.

If doing a real big batch use 4 corn mill and 2 flour.

They are pretty big fresh water fish, with stripped sides.

We call them striped bass.

LHeym, that's a good fish fry dredge.

Tonight, I'm having flathead catfish nuggets, with side vegies and rice.

I'm lazy about the dry batter so don't start from scratch. I use Zartarians or the Louisiana mix but spice it up a bit, dunk the pieces in an egg wash, then the dry batter mix. I add a dash of a product named Seafood Spectacular by the gourmet collection which I buy off Amazon to the egg wash. I like peanut oil.

I use a variant of the above recipe for halibut. I don't like my halibut pieces dry so I make a wet batter by mixing dry ingredients with the egg wash and a bit of beer to get the consistency right. I sometimes add a bit of Krusteaz (or other brand) Tempura Batter Mix so the batter clings better. The crust captures the moisture inside better. Generally each batch is slightly different.

. . . don’t shit yourself with excitement. Frank Luntz has always said, the party that dumps their current candidate will win . . . without regard to who gets dropped in to replace them. My guess is that there were plenty of Democrats hoping the Biden would fall flat on his face. Personally, while I did not watch the debate, if the debate results in Biden being replaced with someone else, I’d be a happy camper. Any choice over the current two would be welcome.

While Trump looked better than Biden, its a long way to November.

I wouldn't be surprised if Biden refuses his party's nomination at the convention- there has been sort of precedent with LBJ.

I didn't think Trump looked good, as much as Biden looked very poor.

Having a URI may have played into that, but God help the republic that this is our choices.

Indeed. Canada is just as screwed. Not with geriatrics as such, but a dishrag Liberal dilettante, an ultra right wing Conservative whose only platform is “I’m not Trudeau!” and a New Democrat whose first & foremost consideration is his Sikh religion.

The western democracies are in serious trouble. Khrushchev might have been prescient when he told Kennedy “We’ll conquer you without firing a shot!”.

I watched about two minutes of the debate. That's all I could stand. I wished that Biden could do better but couldn't make it so even with my lying eyes and ears.

My only wish for Trump was that he would go away, stfu or freeze. It's useless to hope he would quit lying. But he showed vigor doing what he does best - lying. Both will earn him points.

There are several good articles. I chose just one which says enough:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news...86b703195230eb&ei=58

Democrats Privately Discuss Replacing Biden on Presidential Ticket
Story by Aaron Zitner, Catherine Lucey, Annie Linskey, Andrew Restuccia • 6h • 6 min read

(excerpt)

Biden dismissed concerns about his debate performance and calls for him to drop out. “I think we did well,” he told reporters during a stop at a Waffle House after the debate.

“It’s hard to debate a liar,” Biden added, referring to Trump.

===============================================

OTOH, Trump and entourage stopped by McDonalds to celebrate. Trump offered to pay, but of course skipped the bill when he left. Wink

==============================================

To further answer your question, Shanks - As I recall, just before Trump lost to Biden the first time, he said something in that little boy whining voice like - can you imagine losing to someone like Biden? The slur/whine emphasis was on the word Biden.

My bets are still on Biden, simply because everything about Trump/Trumpism is so bad. I just hope Biden picks a good VP.

It's not that Trump could win that gives me pleasure, of course, just the opposite. It's that he might lose again to Biden regardless of the poor performance in debate.

Trump looking better than Biden, but he was a long way from looking good.
"Debacle" is certainly the appropriate term for what we saw last night. Trump spouting his usual bullshit: Joe mumbling a response, of sorts. Neither man cab run on their records, because their records suck!
I always prefer to have the candidate answer the question. Joe made more of an attempt in that regard, just not a coherent one. Trump seldom got anywhere near the question. By acting like himself, he lost the chance to present anything like a strategy. All in all, a pitiful display on both sides.
In Canada, the Conservative only seems ultra right wing in comparison to his opposition. His platform is fairly substantial, for a politician. Fiscal conservatism is much better than the notion that the deficit will take care of itself. A debate between the Canadian candidates is likely to be far more entertaining and informative.
Back to the debate last night, only the diehard Trumpeteers can see that as a good performance. Both parties should be sitting back, saying "we're screwed". RFK got a big boost. Regards, Bill.

I recommend the next debate use springs.
Attached to the jaws of trump and Biden.
On Trump, so he cant talk, on Biden so his mouth doesnt hang open and look comatose. Who would have thought Biden was the mouth breather of the two.
The questions could all be yes or no. Either nod or shake your head to the question. It would make for a better debate.

Good Grief. Trump believes his own lies, Biden can't remember his.
Neither seems capable of recognizing what's real and working with it.

We have a problem, after a pretend primary season that ended in coronations.

Newsom/Harris would not be an improvement, although she fielded Cooper's questions as well as can be expected.

Romney/Gabbard? A corporate raider with a war resistor?

Kennedy/Shanahan? I dunno. I have some doubts about this, his VP nominee is inexperienced.

I idly wonder what David Gergen thinks about this.

The moderators letting trump get away with telling one lie after another without calling him on any of it is also a problem. When he tells an obvious lie, there should be follow up questions that point out it is a lie.

That's seems extremely unlikely to me. Biden will be the Dem nominee unless he voluntarily steps aside and that will never happen. Even if it did, who could the Dems offer as an alternative?

First, if the Dems think they can spin this with "he had a cold," what does that say? Yeah, really old, feeble people can be devastated by a cold.

Second, Biden spent lots of time at Camp David preparing for this, and this was the result???

Third, who could possibly have looked at that and thought "yeah, rough night, but he'll still be fine 3 or 4 years from now running the most powerful nation on earth."

That said, Trump's handlers did a better job. He was mostly "toned down Trump," which is what he needed to be. Of course, he couldn't give a straight answer to any question, but Biden's performance was a gift to him. Good grief, if nothing else shows how bad Biden was, he was debating a convicted con artist and sex offender, and pathological liar, and he got destroyed. Wow.

Also, it is shameful that Biden's handlers, the media and even some on this board have covered for him and attacked anyone who questioned his mental acuity and health. Those same people will now be leading the charge to get Biden replaced now that the truth has been laid bare for all to see.

The real winner last night? Robert Hur.

I can think of nothing more appropriate for Trump's future than for him to lose again to Biden. Then, adding injury to insult, for Trump to suffer the full-on prosecutions for indictments already incurred and more if appropriate, all under Biden DOJ. That would be fun to watch, IMO. All the while knowing that Biden could pardon, but won't.

I don't think Biden's performance was a disaster or that he was "destroyed".

And I don't think Trump was "toned down" at all. He is and always will be an unrestrained, shameless liar.

There is a lot at stake.

First - Trump has the most to lose. His pending prosecutions for example, plus there is a high probability he will commit more crimes in the meantime. His winning the election is his get out of jail card, not to mention his ego.

There are too many issues at stake to list here, such as the outcome of the Ukraine invasion, health and environment issues, democracy vs autocracy or theocracy, NATO, and so forth.

Here's a sample of Trump spewing a constant stream of lies:

See how he evades the question so many times, spewing lies. She had to ask the question three times.

And Biden's sticking with the facts.

The sad and utterly disturbing thing is that GOPers view that lying, corrupt SOB as their winning formula - the whole enchilada.

They are not going to replace him. They missed that opportunity several times, either too stupid (not likely) or too chicken (maybe) or too on-board with corruption, the end justifies the means (most likely).

I strongly believe that if defeating Trump and all Trump represents, the Democratic candidate has to be changed.

The election is not about about Joe Biden. The national stakes are not about Joe Biden.

Thank you Joe. Now, go home.

Trump may be the only R a Dem can beat. However, it is looking more likely Joe Biden is the only Dem Trump can beat.

What is more important, running or even being President or the nation.

I hope on a similar situation, I could say it is not about me and I need to step aside.
We Trump won’t do it. Does Joe Biden have the integrity to do so?

I grew up cat-fishing here in Arizona. We have a very robust Flathead population here. Bartlett lake is amazing, Roosevelt up where Ty is, can be great as well. Bartlett had several fish well into the 60's caught this year, one was over 70.

I was actually fishing the Verde river below Horseshoe Dam Tuesday evening in my Kayak. That river flows into Bartlett.

I don't bother eating them anymore. Purely catch and release.

I release those over about 20-25 lbs. I may start releasing those over 12 - 15 lbs. Although there's obviously more meat on the bigger fish, the reason is the rivers I commonly fish in I consider too polluted. The bigger fish have lived longer thus more time to accumulate toxins.

I haven't yet gotten into catching them with rod & reel yet but want to. Short trotlines near shore with channel or drop-off close by, with live bluegill as bait, three/four finger size is just right, 5-7 ought circle hooks - that is my method. I bait up late in day and check lines early morning. Mid-morning is for cleaning and packaging fish for the freezer. Afternoon is for catching bait. Usually I dedicate 3 - 5 days in a row to this type of fishing. I like it casual, and I have to let the dogs out 3 or 4 times a day. I pull the hooks between times, but let the main lines remain for next time, unless I expect next time to be a long time. At some time, I fetch the whole setup.

I would like to fish by rod & reel at night, but I would also want to setup before dark and stay put all night, sleep on the boat. I don't have the right boat for that yet. Bug and weather protection are must-have.

The flathead was introduced in these waters. Initially they were considered invasive, and they are, but they are not going away. Instead, they are increasingly available. The good thing is they taste good and are fun to catch, and relatively easy to catch too. Live bait is the key. It changes the ratio from mostly channel to mostly flathead with an occasional blue or large channel. I don't like to keep the large ones for reasons stated already.

Years ago, before flathead, I used to set out baited wire mesh traps for channel catfish. The goal was to avoid the large and small fish. The size caught was controlled by the size of the mesh and the mouth opening of the trap. Just big enough to fillet was just right. If I wanted channel catfish, I could do that again. I quit trotlines baited specifically (zote soap cubes) for channel catfish because I caught too many big ones, and too few of the right size.
