Well, I haven't quit the thread discussion.

I was called immoral, stupid, narcissistic, and a lot more over the issue of putting someone on ignore then enhancing the intended effect by posting the ignored message. And not just by Shanks. He mostly went along with anyone who would agree with him.

I was a bit shocked when Shanks posted that link to a Google search because I immediately saw that it made my point, and didn't make his.

It just showed me that he didn't know what he, nor the others, were talking about or accusing.

So, the truth is that Ignore on a social internet forum can be weaponized, but to really be effective it takes a group. An individual is limited, especially when those put on ignore are immune to shaming because they have none.

But there's more to it.

It should be very clear that some participants herein engage, as SOP, in the psychological weaponization described above. We have seen a lot of it in this thread. That's what they do constantly. In a way this whole ARPF is a pit for it. But IMO, it's relatively clean compared to other forums.

Individually, one on one, most people are hard shelled enough to fight back somehow. On the trool's terms and level is not effective. Like the hog, they like it and both get dirty. I described how I fight back, and give a dose of their own medicine by enhancing Ignore.

One distinction, for example, is the latest post by ledvm, harping about an old conspiracy theory that won't go away. We ganged up on him. That's different compared to using the Ignore feature.

And the fact that this thread diverted to delving into the psychology of Ignore is part of it. I went with it because it pissed me off for starters, and because I saw an opportunity. I agree with what you say here, except for the last paragraph.

I also agree that it makes no sense, and is contradictory, to say, "I'm ignoring you."

But "I'm ignoring him" has its justifications. Some people will assume that unanswered claims and accusations must be true. A reminder that the accuser is being ignored by the accused notifies the forum otherwise.

But I agree that such announcements can be overused. Mea culpa. From now on, I'll try to settle for only occasional reminders in proper context.

A couple years ago I was in a gunshop.
There were two young fellows talking, and I realized they were speaking Afrikaans. I have spent enough time in Africa, and often with SADF boys, I could understand it well enough. I greeted them in my poor Afrikaans, and we got to talking. They had been over to a Catipillar Diesel engine school. They were being tourists before going home.

It was a taxi, that 3 black africans knew the driver of from the city, Pietermaritzburg, and they went to the farm.
The cops unloaded 7 goats out of the taxi, along with the 4 men.

Id come home on the weekend and first thing id do is go shoot 3 or 4, hang and butcher them, then pack them into 2 Mitsubishi VCR boxes. Those boxes travelled back and forward on our equivalent of the greyhound buses for along time. The driver never asked why or what. But it must have seemed weird.
