Reminds me of another lucky young man.
As teenagers in the Texas panhandle, we often drove about the country roads blasting rabbits after dark. One inexperienced neighbor, Gerald, talked my brother into letting him shoot his 12 ga Model 12 and he wounded a rabbit that then ran into a clump of beargrass. Gerald then took the shotgun by the barrel and hit the rabbit with the stock, breaking both against the beargrass.
homer We immediately disarmed him and sure enough, the safety was off on a loaded chamber!
Needless to say, that was the last time we took him hunting!

I was thinking the same thing. Sound wasn't quite the same as the other shots and it looked like it was cut right where it shot his hat off. Stupid either way.

I thought the first place you would look would be at the action. What the heck could anyone possibly tell from looking down the barrel.

That was my exact first thought. Just because someone is of age doesn't mean they should even handle a firearm.
