First of, I love to read this topics.. I always think of new things I could possibly buy. Now, I wanted to make my own, but with some limitations. 1. A 22lr and a shotgun is not accounted for, since everybody should have one, so with this you are up to 6 firearms. I just want to know your other 4. 2. Not the Big 5.. of course you could choose a 375H&H or larger. Just not for the Big 5.

well if a 375hh is not needed and a 12 ga and 22 lr are already accounted for then... I only need two: a 270 win and a 338 win mag Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I have a 22/250 that I've had since 1976 Ruger M77(I bought it at the age of 15) I've re-barreled it once and will probably keep it forever although in the long run I wish it was a .223 for ammo's sake. I have a .257 Roberts built on a Husky action and a Pac Nor super match barrel that was a caliber I wanted since childhood and now have one the last 4 years or so and have killed a small pile of Deer, Antelope and Coyotes with it, that rifle is going to be with me forever. I have a 30/06 that I've had since 1986 Win M70 "Lightweight" pushfeed in a "Wintuff" brown laminate stock. This rifle has accounted for a great big pile of Deer, Elk, Antelope, Coyotes, a Bighorn Sheep and a Mountain Goat and has ridden for hundreds of miles on my shoulder. This rifle is going nowhere. Then I'm left with some tough choices for the fourth. Its a toss up between my .338 Win Mag, 9.3x62, .375 H&H and a project or two I have yet to complete (400 Whelen!) This fourth choice however is meaningless as I would hunt everything in North America with the rifles I already named above.

For me there would be my .243 WSSM, .270 WSM, .300 Winny, and .358 STA. If I can be so bold to list my second four, all of these are from my present rifles. A .257 Wby, 7mm STW, .338 Lapua, .416 Rem. If I could get bolder and list a third four, also from my rifles that I shoot weekly. My .25 WSSM, .270 WSM, .340 Wby, .416 Rigby. I can make a fourth list, but not to bore anyone, these will do. Good shooting. phurley

Why would you NEED more then one? Fact of life is that you figure out a way to make what you have work. Now if I could choose four I would still only use two. 223 and 270. I would never sell my 10/22 the first firearm I ever owned. Nor would I sell my custom 7mag which was a gift. Howard Moses Lake, Washington USA hwhomes@outlook.com

4 guns, boy the wifey sure wants to hear about this idear. For my uses in the Alaska Interior have to be: 10-22 AR-15 7 mag 338 mag AR for hunting off snowmachine. 7 Mag for sheep, moose, and caribou. 338 mag for bear or bison (if I ever get a tag). The 10-22 for plinking debris floating down the Yukon this time of year and all around use in the woods.

If I could only have 4 rifles, I would also be too despondent to hunt. So I guess it would be a moot point. I guess I'd have to look at it as the ones I wouldn't separate from (without bloodshed that is) 1. Rem BDL 308 (it was my father's) 2. Win 70 30-06 (it was my uncle's) 3. Win 70 338 win mag, kills elk like the fist of GOD 4. Can't decide on either my Wby 257 mag, or my Win 70 fwt 257 AI, but one of those 2 for smaller deer. 1. 25-06 2. 300 Win Mag 3. 375 H&H 4. 404 Jeffery I'd be quite happy using this combo for the entire world. So far my 30-06 alone has been working great for everything in North America though. ____________________________ If you died tomorrow, what would you have done today ... 2018 Zimbabwe - Tuskless w/ Nengasha Safaris 2011 Mozambique - Buffalo w/ Mashambanzou Safaris

Howard makes a very good point about NEED. For the lower 48 a 300 H&H would fill all my hunting NEEDs. If including AK then the 375 H&H would fill all my NEEDs. But, to what I think was the intent of the post: .223 (5.56mm) 7x65R (or 7x64 or .280) 300 H&H 375 H&H .

So the .22LR and 12Ga are in in the truck, and only four others can go: 223 Semi Stag 8L or FN 2000 (Probably the Stag) 308 Semi BM-59 or KelTec RFB ( nod to the BM) 408 Chey-Tac (less practical ammo-wise long-range choice) (Hate to leave the Blaser 338 and the 300RUM) 50 BMG Barrett (the other biggies stay) Which requires (most painfully) leaving my first love: 6.5x54 MS my .405 and my other numerous calibres to languish in the safe as I leave. But, I can forage with and face most anything wherever I go , with the quartet above.. DuggaBoye-O NRA-Life Whittington-Life TSRA-Life DRSS DSC HSC SCI

If the 22 and shotgun is a gimme then I'd have to say my four would be a 257 Roberts or 25-06, 270WSM, 30-06 and 35 Whelen. All of NA is covered. Now if Africa were to be thrown into the mix I'd have to with a 375 H&H or 375 Ruger.

With these five, I can kill anything on God's planet Earth. If I had to boil it down to just two, it would be the 12 gauge pump and the .375 H&H. Cheers to all, Bill.
