Since AR 15 type rifles is only for IPSC use over here, and banned from hunting , and rumors has it that the 338 Lapua Magnum and the TRG rifles might be banned from civillian use , the choice would be

Blaser R 93- with some barrels,

mauser 7mm Rem mag, going to build soon

Mauser .404 jeffery

Remington in 6mm BR norma .

and ruger nr 1 in .450 Nitro Express

I HOPE THAt I NEVER WILL GET TO 4 WEAPONS, but now for a ordinary hunter over here its 6 weapons , 50 BMG banned, 500 Asquare, Jeffery impossible to get license on. so hope it wont be harder than it is .

What I've liked best and couldn't part with:
.223 with composite bull brl. for varmints
.270 Win. for deer under 300 yrd.s
7mm Rem Mag for deer beyond 300 yrd.s
30'06 for black bear...
or my Titanium 7mm 08 if it's too steep for my knees. I know I cheated but it my list.

lets see, for me and everything I would be likely to need. 22 long rifle probably a 10-22, if not a CZ bolt action. Then a 223. A rem 700 would do. 3rd I think a 270 win. A rem 700 would be fine here also. Fourth would be a Mauser action 338 win. I'm not going to be in Africa any time soon, There's no Brown bears In Utah, ammo is common for all. I could get by with these. In order to have only four there would have to be some kind of BS going on so I'd stick with common calibers. If you ad pistols to the group it would be better. DW

Together with the 12 bore and the .22LR, all ammunition is easy to find and there's nothing on land(and not much in the sea) that you can't take with these boys.

if the small bore and shotgun don't count.

my 35 whelen (the 06 actually is probably more versatile, but I much prefer my whelen) and 375, with those two nothing else is NECESSARY, but I'd add on my 308 norma for better distance and I'd like a 257 roberts so I have something smaller too.

Not counting handguns.

A .223 for light work.

.308 for deer sized game.

.300 WinMag for every bigger in North America.

And honestly I could get it done with that. My fourth would be a 7mm Mag, because I have one already.

I started with and still have 243, 270, 30-06, and 338 WM. I would trade the 270 for a 260 and call that the best battery. However, I added and now shoot 30-30. 35 rem, and 45/70 Marlins more often. I have to place a 22 mag in the group we are not counting. I love my 22 LR and shotguns but the 22 mag is a very useful tool.

I've been doing fine with that trio for years, and before that I hunted for a decade with the 300wm and no other centerfire rifle.

My fourth would be either a .223 or 6x45.

OK, my turn. If talking need, then its:
.270 Win (for deer, antelope, sheep, goats, and
in a pinch, elk & black bear)
.338 WM (big bears, incl. big black's, elk and
some big stuff in Africa; would not
hesitate to use it for deer size game if
that's all I had. I love this cartridge.)

Don't need anything else. However, I also have and use: .25-06 Rem., .308 Win., .300WM. All
of my rifles are selected on the basis of game to be pursued. Though some are versatile; some are better for certain uses.

I would have to say:

.243 Win
.270 Winchester or 7mm Rem Mag (depending on preference)
.338 Win Mag
.416 Rem Mag

With these four rifles, you would be good to go for pretty much everything.

You could substitute a .30-06 or .280 Rem for the .270 or 7mm mag, and be just as well off.

I'd say the perfect basic 3-gun battery on which to build from is a 22LR, 12GA, and a 30-06. If I were to add an additional two guns, I'd probably add the 416 Remington on the top end and the 243 Winchester on the bottom end. The 416 Rem is very versatile with a bread and butter RL15/350TSX load for big game while having more horsepower than the lesser magnums for guide work of stopping big bears. The 243 Win is also very versatile for a mixture of big game, predator, and varmint work. If I were to add an additional gun to this battery, I may look at a mid-bore that was very efficient with a short barrel for a compact rifle. This may be a 350RM, a 338RCM, etc. I'd like to say I'd include the 375H&H in such a battery, but I feel the 416 Remington would be a more versatile choice on the bigger end of the scale. In reality though, I'd probably ignore having overlap and would break the rules to squeeze some sort of 375 into the mix.

Lots of good choices available for individual needs. Whatever is the perfect choice for one, may not be the best choice for another.

Given the 22LR and the 12 ga ... and that you're gonna let me have my big bores I'd keep:

AR-15 with a 20" HB and 18" 6.8 SPC II topends

The Ottmar 1908 Peruvian Mauser in 6mm Rem

A rifle in the 264 Win Mag, .270 WIn, .308 Win range ... haven't decided yet

A custom pre-64 M70 in .338 Win Mag

(and I'd hide the 9,3x74R double rifle in the Africa pile! Wink )

Thank Heavens I don't really have to do this!!!

My choices would be based almost entirely on being able to get ammo should there be shortages in the future. They would be:

.223, probably an AR set up for varminting
.308, a nice light weight bolt gun
.30-06, a medium weight sporter
30-30, ammo found evrywhere

I know there's nothing exotic about my choices but they will take any game (combined with the .22 and the shot gun) in N America and reloading components are easy to come by as well.

If the 12 ga. and the 22lr are included I would have to go with
a .223 probably Panther arms or Bushmaster flattop.
243. A bolt action would be fine here.
a 270. Again a bolt action
a 338 Win Mag bolt action
Its a tough choice between the 22 hornet and a 223 but the 223 wins for versatility. Its also a toss up between the 22-250 and the 243 but again the 243 wins for versatility. The other two would be my choices hands down. DW

The though of four total is just too confining. I could probably manage to keep it to four in a given cartridge. A person needs at least four 22 CF rifles, Hornet, .223, 22-250 and of course a .222 Vixen. And that shorts you a heavy barrel version of the .223 and 22-250. How do you get by without both a 25-20, 25-06 and .257 Roberts? How do you manage with less than a 30-30, 30-06, 308, a Savage 99 in .300 Savage a 300 WM? Getting into the 6.5mms, the 7mms and 277 cal is just way too much to contemplate.

#2 a FN Mauser 30-06 (3x9 scope)

#3 a Mauser actioned 375 H&H ( 2-7 scope)
