that is one very balanced battery.

The 223 makes a nice spur-wing goose gun in Africa. (But the 270 works fine, if one has ammo to splurge.)

I've never used the 450 Rigby but I've thought of rechambering my 416 Rigby for it. The 450 has that extra diameter and weight.
(I've also thought of swapping out the 416 for a lighterweight 416 Ruger Hawkeye.)

(As mentioned earlier in the thread, because I top out at 416 Rigby, my choices all back down the ladder a notch: 338 WM, 270 Win. These latter two in light, accurate rifles.)

OK, Only 4 rifles, and African animals are not considered...

1. A H&K 91 in 308.

2. A Blaser R 33 with a Tracker barrel in 308.

3. A Blaser R 93 in 300 Win Mag.

4. A Chapuis scoped double in 9,3x74R.

Since the original premise was 'no big 5" I'll take that to mean no heavy rifle, so my .416 Hoffman stays home, and no 470 NE, either.

The 4 I'd choose would include:

pre-64 model 70 .243 (came from my father) all original, including an old Weaver K4 with spider web crosshairs.
pre-64 model 70 .264 Win Mag (also from my father) I re-stocked this with a Brown Precision glass stock and it's a tack driver.
pre-64 model 70 .30-06 featherweight (came from my grandfather)all original, expect for a Leupold 2.5x8.
post-64 model 70 .338 Win Mag (hey, I had to get a rifle myself!)Glass stocked, with a Lilja stainless, fluted barrel. My #1 rifle.

I do about 90% of my hunting with the .264 and .338. The '06 is a wonderful, very accurate rifle, but I don't use it as often as I should. What the hell does 'need' have to do with anything? I just had to leave off some very nice rifles that I really like!

If I could choose any 4 calibers, not just the ones I own, I might go with:

.223
.264 WM
.338 WM
.375 H&H

And that still doesn't account for the .416 or .470!

My 4 choices are thus:

#1 - 223 or 223AI I have the AI.

#2 - 270 win

#3 - 338-06

#4 - 416 rem mag


Of course I own a few in between too.

Given the rules, my picks would be a 375 H&H, a Garand, an M-14/M1A, and an AR-15.

Life's just too short not to have a Garand and an M-14. The AR-15 would work fine in 223 for deer here in TX, and they're always making interchangeable top ends in new calibers if you want a larger (or smaller) bore. Somebody mentioned the 458 Socom. That'd be great for pigs in the brush.

But I still figure there might be gaps in the choices you'd have with cartridges that will fit the AR-15 format. Plus there are places you can't hunt with a semi-auto. For that there's the 375.

To cover the animals I hunt:

Matt P's battery looked nice so I thought I'd re-do mine and fill in number 4.

I have shot guinea fowl and spur-wing geese with a 270 Win, as well as hartebeest, waterbuck, and roan, so that would be my entry level, passing up such lovely rounds as the 243 Win and the "Bob". For deer it can push a 110 grain 'X' bullet at 3450 fps, easily:
1. 270 Win
Next up is something with more punch and authority on the same animals, maintaining good long range reach. Yes, I've used the following very nicely on guinea fowl, and buffalo, and it, too, comes in some -7 lb models before scope:
2. 338 Win Mag
However, for all-around walking the bush, being able to reach way out there and really thump something up close I like the following handloaded to the potential of its case volume (350 grain at 2800 fps):
3. 416 Rigby.
Finally, I think that a fourth rifle would be good to fill out this battery. While a 505 Gibbs would be a dream cartridge, it's case volume asks for a truly breathtaking load and the rifle ends up quite heavy, too. The 500 Mbogo is really all that I want in a 'stopping' calibre. Practically speaking, it can almost match the 505 Gibbs. If I had the money I would probably be delighted with the newly developed and more modest 500 MDM thumper in a handy 21" barrel package.
4. 500 Mbogo, 500 MDM, or 505 Gibbs.
I would happily walk anywhere with the 338 or 416, or one of number 4, and I could carefully go anywhere in North America with the first, but would prefer number 2 or 3.
