Just shot this one this morning about 200 yards from the farmhouse. Sorry for the hole, he jumped out about fifty yards away, caught my scent and headed almost straight away, shot him just in front of his hip and the bullet exited his forehead. That is pretty good penetration, and is why I still like to use the TSX for deer, at least if you are trophy hunting and don't like to pass up bad angles. Used my POS, but good shooting, beat up and lucky Ruger 7x57 and 140 TSX. Not really anything special, just a nice mature older buck, with not very special genetics. That's great! What are the odds that the bullet could transit the whole body and exit between the eyes? Too funny. Fjold He certainly didn't travel far, about 24 inches down. He was in some tall grass, and in a little fold in the hillside, all I could see was the tops of his antlers. It was a typical whitetail shot, had about a second from first sight to first shot, couldn't even see him pile up because of the grass. A shot not taken is always a miss

I rather object to your description of a Ruger 7x57 as a POS. If you will, please refer to the outstanding cartridge in a very fine action as " A well suited to the task," firearm. Very happy for you and your success!

That sure is something about all that penetration. Right nice Buck too. Congratulations on a fine Kill.

Scott That was said very 'tongue in cheek' because of all the Ruger bashing I hear. This old 7x57 would be the last rifle I would ever get rid of, even though I have a lot of nice ones it is the one that has consistently flattened game from elk in Wy. to kudu in Namibia, and a trailer load of Missouri whitetails. I don't hunt with it as much anymore because my son usually grabs it. He pretty much believes it to be the absolute bark of death, but he was in college so I took it out as I had not been seeing many bucks. The morning I shot this one, I never saw a doe- six bucks. I also have shot it so much that a running deer doesn't have much of a chance if under 200 yards, it is just a natural. It also shoots 3 shots in .6-.7 triangles till you are just tired of it- so boring. A shot not taken is always a miss

We were lucky to grow up in a hunting family, so there is never a shortage of stories whenever we're together. We need someone else to tell stories to, already heard all of each other's. A shot not taken is always a miss

Nice deer, congrats! I gave them things up though. I arrowed a very large gray haired buck in Ohio years ago. He was so strong and tough I went and bought a pressure cooker just for him. I marinated for days, and pressure cooked the meat. No way to chew the nasty tasting meat. I gave it away and made some enemies! I have not used the pressure cooker in over 30 years now.

This one will be sausage and jerky. I have three antlerless tags to shoot some young does for steaks. I think I'll grind up even the loins. A shot not taken is always a miss

Those are two nice deer. I'm surprised you were able to take him with a 7x57 and the TSX?? You are lucky to be able to hunt your own land. That is becoming more rare each year........ Best thing to do. I also like the fact you use a good old rifle and not one of the super, duper, whiz bang magnums. A sure sign of confidence and a good shot. I respect a man that knows his rifle.
