Had a great week.

Got a once-in-a-lifetime Colorado bull Moose tag, and took a huge Shiras Moose at Cameron Pass on the continental divide on Oct. 3rd. Used my 35 Whelen with 280 gr. SAF. One shot (heart & double lung) @ 40 yards. Bull walked four steps and fell over stone dead.

Today, Oct. 7th, I shot a Colorado 16" Pronghorn. One horn measured 16 1/4" and the other 16 1/16th". Prongs were 8 1/2" high and had 7 1/2" bases. Used my 280 Rem. with 140gr. Win. Ballistic Silvertip. One shot @ 100 yards. Double lung (no heart). Ran 10-20 yards and collapsed. My best Pronghorn in 25 years of hunting them in Colorado & Wyoming.

Wow, what a week!

congrats!
I got mine in Texas. Do not know the measurements but it was a nice fat buck.
Darn things were everywhere - our outfitter had 30 hunters and all scored!

Thank you everyone for the kind words.

And thank you Just-a-Hunter for contacting me with your offer to post the pics, and then doing so. I really appreciate your offer and time.

Over the years I've had so many pics that I would have liked to have posted on animals, rifles, etc., that I regret not being more highly educated in computers.

So, again Todd, thank you very much.

I am a happy hunter, and I am still on a high...

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Thanks Bob!

Sorry if I got your Moose tag. I'm not exactly sure of the number of years I have applied for that tag, but it is somewhere between 20-25 years. I figured I'd die before I got it. So, all's well that ends well I guess.

Good luck on YOUR draw!

Todd,

Interesting that you said you have that exact rifle in 280 Rem.

It was an exact copy of that 35 Whelen that I took the Moose with, that I shot the Antelope with in 280 Rem.: a Ruger SS/syn Hawkeye. I guess we own the same rifles!

I really like these Ruger rifles for their weight and accuracy, besides the convenience of SS and plastic.

I now will hunt my Antelope in Wyoming with my other rifles/calibers, some beauties by Wayne at AHR, and some Ruger Africans.

Pronghorn are so much fun to hunt!

Beautiful animals both. I'd love to see more pictures of that moose, he's a monster for sure! Just curious how many years did it take to draw your moose tag? I've git 17 PP for moose now and have a buddy who is maxed out, it's definitely a dream hunt of mine.

That's a long time, but obviously worth it. Every year my buddy says it his year, but it hasn't happened yet. I'm hoping I draw mine before I retire that'll put me over 33 years of applying by that time.

Great animals, looks like you are having a fun fall.
Can you show any more Moose pictures?
Love to see those Colorado Moose. I've been applying for Moose longer than they've been giving preference points and no luck yet.
I missed applying one year but that was before the points when they treated Moose draw like Desert Sheep.

Congrats on the once in a life time shiras. Antelope is not to shabby either.

Its ironic,
My brother moved too Colorado a couple of years ago. He has an easier time finding moose than elk.

I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

Thanks again guys!

Snellstrom, I don't have any more pics. Sorry. The photo you see, was taken with my camera. Luckily, in my joy and celebration, I had the sense to hand someone MY camera, as others took their pics. A person taking more pics at the kill site, said he'd email me some he took. Haven't received them yet, but if I do, I'll be happy to post them. tu2
