Deer shed?
When do deer in your part of the country drop antlers? I always thought late Feb. I shot this deer New Years day, it ran about 35 yrds fell down and rolled over once. Was I surprised when I walked up and saw it had dropped both antlers where it fell. You can see the red stump on the deer's head, the base of the horns were white like old sheds. Deer was in great shape with 3/4 inch of fat on the rear quarters.

I guess it depends on when they stop breeding. When their testosterone drops they shed. That probably was not the Dominate Buck in that area.Sure is a nice one. Big Grin

I was up by Boulder, CO on Wednesday and spoked 7 mule deer out of an irrigation ditch. The only buck in the bunch was a forked-horn. He still had his antlers.

Nice buck too!!

I've seen bucks here have their antlers in mid March. But about 20 years ago, a friend of mine shot a buck on December 24th. It took off in a dead run and jumped the cattle fence and piled up in the ditch. When he got to it, both antlers had come off, just like yours. I've since had friends shoot "antlerless" Deer in early January that were shed off bucks. Ours usually drop in late Jan-late Feb.

I see muiles every day with horns on, the white tails have all dropped theirs though.

When I was in Iowa, I filmed quite a few large whitetails in Scott County park and several had dropped their antlers by Christmas Day. OTOH, I've also got 3 ten points that look like triplets all still sporting their headgear on February 14th, Valentines Day.

In Vinton County, OH, my buddy found a shed on December 19th and the buck is on his trail cam with and without the antlers. He dropped both by Jan 1.

Around here the antlers will fall off without any significant force in early March, but from the middle of January, any significant force is likely to bust them off at the base, at least by my observations of my neighbor's penned deer.
Rm007, that is a very neat group of picts, thanks.
