I really don't care what you call it, I can find something else to worry about if I try real hard, like the monthly bills, price of gas, tanzania pricing, I mean get a life! Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

All this hand-wringing about concern over offending someone reminded me of some fun I had 8-10 years ago. A buddy and I'd had a fine morning of Killing and Skinning. As was usual for those days, we would go right on to enjoy some of the best (actually the world's finest) BBQ the Carolinas had to offer. We would go right on in those clothes, shower when we got back from dinner and put on clean outfits for the afternoon Hunts. We were not "covered in blood", but I feel sure a drop or two might have splashed onto our pants. We were just about finished eating when a lady stepped up to the table and asked, "Are you two Hunters?" She had been sitting right next to us with maybe 7 of her friends. Typically, everyone spoke in low tones so as not to disturb other people's discussions. Anyway, as we stood, my buddy said, "We try our best to be Hunters, and we do right well at it.", and we both smiled. One of us asked her to join us, but she declined and tried her best to glare at us, so we sat back down. She then asked, "How do you know you won't shoot someone while you are Hunting?" I decided it was my turn to answer and coupled with her obvious complete disgust, I did believe I detected a bit of YANKEE accent. So I first asked if she was from "Alabama"? That got most everyone around us smiling who could hear her. Of course she quickly explained she was from somewhere "Up North"(didn't really matter). So I said, "It is real easy. We go in the woods, put in 100 rounds and just start Blasting away in every direction. Then when it gets quiet, we listen to see if anyone is Hollerin'. If so we tell them to get out of the way cause we are ready to Hunt!" The people with her were rolling with laughter, but she seemed not to appreciate it. So I told her, "No, we tend to Hunt a good bit from Trees, so we are shooting down on-to the Deer and Varmints. And there is little chance of the Bullet Bouncing(didn't figure she would know ricochet from shine-ola) into anyone off in the distance." I figured that would be the end, but she persisted. She asks, "But what if someone is out walking, or on a Nature Walk???"(Obviously she did not mean going to take a leak.) Now she had gone on just a bit too long for me. So, I stood and told her, "Those fools would be Trespassing, shot on sight and either burried with the dozer, or drug out to the road so the Sherriff could figure out who they were so we could Sue their families!" Most everyone in the place enjoyed it and she went back to her group shaking her head. For those of you who actually think she would have "warmed" to ANY terms regarding Hunting and Killing, you simply don't understand their lack of reality. I'll offer that perhaps when you have a bit more experience in dealing with these fools, you will understand that condescending to them gains nothing, and makes you feel bad for sucking-up to a fool. Good Hunting and clean 1-shot Kills.

I think "harvest" is about right if you shot the game behind a high fence. It was planted for you to harvest, and you did. You certainly didn't "hunt" it; or if you did, it was similar to "hunting" for your car keys in your house or apartment. You knew they were there somewhere and you keep walking around in circles until you stumble over them. I "hunt", "shoot", and "kill". Generally in a non-hunting environment if the subject comes up; I "hunt". People I'm around are intelligent enough to know what "hunting" leads to. I don't feel the need to choose my words to justify what I do.

It's become so popular, in some areas, to plant a deer feed spot, that 'harvest' is exactly the right term. Hunt game like a man, then it's different. Brian

Killing a deer and harvesting a deer both register the same in my mind. I tend to use harvest when I'm around people who don't care for hunting. Most people know that I head hunt and harvest, IMO, seems to help portray to my audience that I am also utalizing and eating the deer in addition to having him mounted for the wall. I'll use both "kill" and "harvest", but more often than not you would probably catch me saying "shot." ____________________________ If you died tomorrow, what would you have done today ... 2018 Zimbabwe - Tuskless w/ Nengasha Safaris 2011 Mozambique - Buffalo w/ Mashambanzou Safaris

No man, I'm not in to Possum BBQ! ----- Orangeburg, SC has two great BBQ places. We were at the one next to the Pepsi Distribution Center and I can't think of their name at the moment. Or, you could go to "Antley's BBQ" which is one block off the main drag. Anyone can tell you how to find it. The brothers that run it are related to the folks in the other restaurant. Both are fine Hunters. And one even does Taxidermy. Lots of nice mounts to see there. At one time, there was Earl Dukes' BBQ. It used to be over near the State Police Post, but Earl Jr. decided it was too much work and closed it. His Daddy(Earl Sr.) had the best down there back in the `70s. He was in Cameron, SC at that time. Mr. Earl would be stirring the Hash and tell us boys to come on back(after 2-3 plates) and for us to get "full", cause he didn't want us to leave and still be hungry. It was all the BBQ, Hash, cole slaw, baked beans, hush puppies, fries, bread and Tea(pitchers on the table) you could eat back then for $2.50. "We shall serve no Swine before it's time. - Earl Dukes" Mr. Earl was one fine fellow.

I don't even harvest my garden, I pick it! Our local ranchers cut and bale hay and I think what wheat farmers do is combine. Using the work harvest is the same as refering to men or women as persons. Generic terms because some sensitive soul can't stand the though of their own gender.

Yes I dislike the word harvest, sounds like some dumb F*ck from a tv hunting show. I will harvest grain, or vegetables from my garden, I kill a deer, elk, or antelope! And I eat it!

Hey KSTEPHENS, I never could think of the name, but I knew it was on "Whitman Street" behind the Pepsi Distribution Center. It finally got to bothering me, so I called a buddy in Cameron and he looked it up. It is also named "Dukes BBQ" and there is one additional "Dukes BBQ" on (maybe) Chestnut Street. When Earl Jr. had the one open near the State Police Post, there were " 3 " Dukes BBQ restaurants in Orangeburg. That is why we simply refered to it as the Whitman Street BBQ restaurant, to avoid confusion about where we were going. As Don and I talked about it, we both remembered Mr. Earl Dukes Sr. had franchised it to the other folks many years ago. As you know the Key is the Sauce and clean meat(no gristle or fat). The Antley Brothers are related to the folks that own the Whitman Street restaurant and grew up working there. Then they opened their own restaurant right off the By-Pass. ----- Had a buddy come to visit when I lived near Greenwood, SC in the Epworth community. We drove the 90 miles down to Orangeburg so he could have some of the BBQ. I told him there was one problem with it, but I would wait until we finished before telling him. Finally we got through and he was about to burst, but still wanted to know what could possibly be the problem with that BBQ. Looked him square in the eyes and asked, "How far from Raleigh will you have to go to get BBQ that good?" Then it dawned on him - all the way to Orangeburg!
