Help, 9,3X62!

My wife asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I'm stuck. I love my CZ LUX's with "hog back" stocks. I want a 9.3X62 but the only rifle CZ offers with my favorite stock style it is the FS model. I wish they still imported the LUX model with the 24" barrel. I just can't get warm and fuzzy with the "American" stock.

Question: Is the 9.3X62 a 200 yd. cartridge for all practical purposes? If so, then would the 20.5" barrel hurt me that bad on the velocity loss? Thoughts please.

I have the lux 9.3x62 cz...............luckily as in Australia it's not standard so it was a 9 month wait.

You will be fine with any of the bullets out to 200 yards but the flatest shooting would be the 250 gr Nos BT, the 232 gr Norma Vulcan or Oryx (I forget which) or a 250 gr Barnes X bullet and the woodleigh 250 gr bullet.

I am using speer 270gr bullets in mine, there soft and good for pigs and thin skinned stuff but would not be good if I get the chance to shoot tougher game with it.

I had one of the older CZ's w/the 34" tube. Shot VERY well but I already had a pair of .375's and a .338-06 M70. ALL three had served me very well, so the 9.3 was a needless duplication.

IMHO and I've killed a lot of game with the .375 and .338-06, the 9.3x62 with even the std 286 gr slug is MORE than capable of taking NA game out to 300 yds,so 200 is a cake walk.

The short tube will drop velocity a bit but all barrels are different, the loss may not be that much. Get what appeals to you.

Tom,

Wow! If I was you I'd let Santa "come on down" the chimney with that short-tubed 9.3x62 and be as a happy as Pig in Sh*t! I'd be doing a jig around the Christmas tree all day and don't forget to get Momma something nice in return, too!

In all seriousness, there is a fair number of short tubed 9.3x62's here in Europe and I don't know that any of us (including me, with my custom 20" 9.3x62 tube) feels handicapped in any manner when so equipped. One of my hunting buddies took a Blaser 9.3x62 Tracker (18.5") barrel to Africa and wacked everything he shot at with one each vanilla-flavored 9.3x62 286 gr. PMP Round Nose bullet also. Net, I don't think your gonna be handicapped with a 20" tube.

Yeah, there's a whole bunch of banter about 24" to obtain the absolute maximum fps out of those tubes but for my reasoning, so what; 26" or 28" also? A coupla fps's? And that in a neat little, tidy package like what you're considering? Now that I think about it; my 9.3x62 short tubed rifle is one of the very few rifles in my battery with which every animal I've hit with it (don't worry, I've missed a few, too) has expired with a single tug of the trigger and that with an array of Speer, NBT's, & Woodliegh projectiles. Doesn't get any better in my opinion and I use a 9.3x62 weekly from October until January on Drive Hunts (like tomorrow morning!), stalking & High Seats.

Then again, for all those "glass half-full" types out there - you'll have a .5" advantage over me.

Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus......

Cheers,

...hacksawtom - I use my 9,3x62 with 20" barrel for anything anytime - in our places I use it for a game from roebucks to brown bears - since it fits me so well I took it to Zim this year - where amongst other things - a solid took enough speed to penetrate some 1,5 m of eland on 180 m quartering shot that is enough for me - you can check my report:

- so - no in praxis 20" barrel won't hurt you no way

Thanks much for the timely and thoughtful replies. Mulling over what you guys said made me go back through my memories and I can't remember having shot but a very few animals over 200 yards! As a matter of fact I've shot more under 100 feet then I've shot over 200 yards.

As for a scope, I have a Leupold 1.5X5 laying around begging to be put on a 9.3X62! Thanks for the help.

I have a 9.3x62 scout with a 22" barrel. I shoot 286gr partition at just over 2400fps. Shot my moose last year at 280 yards. with a 200 yard zero you only have 11 inchest of drop at 300 yards. Considering the size of game shot with the 9.3 that isn't too much drop.

not quite a 9,3 but the new 375 ruger alaskan is supposed to get 300 gr @ 2500 out of a 20" tube...

http://ruger.com/Firearms/PDF/NewProducts/HM77RSPHAB-A-S.pdf

you could neck to 9,3 like 366 torque wants too. or just get the 9,3x64 or rechamer the 62 to a 64 thumb
