I figured some could use a break from liquids vs solids. It will be the first year I get to hunt on my new land in East Texas. I'll be using my CZ 550 Full Stock in 6.5x55 with a new VRX 1-4x German #4. Loads are 155 Lapua Mega behind a charge of R15 for a modest muzzle velocity of 2450 fps. Due to the trees, shots won't be over 125 yards.

I'm doing a combo deer & cow elk hunt. I'm kind of tossing around the idea of either my .358 Win Savage 99.

Or my .300 H&H built on a 1917 Remmy action.

I'll probably take both to hunting camp and decide there.

The Ruger Mark II in 7mm-08 will get the nod this year. Shooting 140 grain Nosler Partitions being pushed with a modest load of RL-15.

For deer here at home, I am using the same outfit you have, Scott, with 130-gr Barnes TSX handloads. About a month ago I picked up a Marlin .30-30 in a pawn shop for $200. I cleaned it up and put XS Ghost ring sights on it, so I want to shoot a deer or a hog with it too. Finally, for my trip to central Texas this year looking for a really big buck, and paying big bucks to do it, I will bring my AHR .30-'06 with 165-gr TSX. Should do the job.

I'll probably be using my M-70 featherweight in .260 Remington.

120 grain bullets to be the top picks!

I greatly enjoy hunting small game and deer with a longbow. But I'm recovering from an injury at the moment which is hindering my use of the bow. If I recover in time, it'll be my bow, if not, I'll probably fall back on my .22 for small game and 30-06 for deer.

This year I'll be using something new, a Weatherby Mark V in .270 Weatherby. Scope is a Leupold VariX3 4.5-14x. I got it for my mule deer/antelope combo hunt in WY, but since I didn't draw for antelope, I guess it'll just be a mulie hunt. I'll also use it for hunting in WV here, as the shots can be 300 yards, not that my .30-06 wasn't do a good job on them, I just wanna play with my new toy! dancing

Scott,

Over the years, I've built or customized several rifles for deer hunting situations. But, there's one that I just happened upon a couple of years ago that I haven't bloodied yet so I'll take it on some more hunts. Really, I'm beginning to wonder if it's jinxed!?

IF I'm healed up enough and have any decent stamina, I'll do a few local hunts and use my .257 Bob. I suspect though that I've done enough damage to my body this year that I'm going to have to take the year off. I have no way of knowing yet if my collar bone is even remotely healing well enough to take recoil. The bone is definitely shortened quite a bit and I'm not certain at all about how much my arm "geometry" has changed.

Yep, 2011 - gonna be an interesting second half of the year.

But, back to the real question: Remington M7MS with a 100gr. TSX at 3,000 fps.

Regards,

Robert

I'll be using the only centerfire rifle I have left, 8X57IS pushing 200gr bullets @ 2700ish fps. MPBR +or- 3" to 270yds when zeroed @ 230yds. It cleaned the clock on a couple of Whitetails last year.

I ran out of Nosler Partitions so I picked up 400 of the 200gr Speer Hotcores. Hopefully they will be as accurate as the Partitions were.

@ 2700-2750 fps the Hotcores should work nicely.

like an earlier poster, I'll be using whatever the doctor allows after neck surgery. I believe it will probably be my 257AI. Two years ago after much more radical surgery he restricted me to .223 so I loaded up some 60gr Nosler partitions. I never got to hunt however because I went on an early scouting trip to my property and slipped on a wet rock. This put an early end to the season. I don't expect a repeat so I am alrady anxious for November.

Been there done that! Took mine one time killed a nice doe. I have the St. Pierre scope mount on the one I hunt with but have three of them and an 96/11 Schmidt Rubin.

As for me I hope to have my .257AI back together and also hope to have the new .270WSM out of lay away and a load worked up for it.
However the .308 or .300Winny could get a nod depending how much I get to hunt.

For the ML season it will be my .62 caliber flint rifle.

A Mini-Mauser in .223 for the close ones and a semi-custom Ruger M77MKII in .264WM for the ones far away. I've got a BRNO 21H in 7X57 that use to be my "go to" rifle that I haven't used in a few years. I'll probably take it few times too. That double trigger is pure nostalgia, very effective and a lot of fun.

I'll be using a open sighted 44 Mag. a Ruger Redhawk with home cast bullets, or an open sighted Win.30-30 with home cast bullets.
Shooting a deer with a scoped high velocity rifle is not enough of challenge any more.
