I don't think I had ever seen the cartridge stacked up against another cartridge. But the most recent issue of Rifle Shooter had a photo comparing a 30-06, 35 Whelen, 350 Rigby, 9.3x62 and 375 H&H.

That 350 is a huge cartridge.

It’s not as long as a 375, but I think Rigbys habit was to put them on magnum actions.

It’s the coolest cartridge. Get one in your hand and you just keep turning it over and over remembering all those stories from the days of old...

I have an issue of rifle magazine, somewhere, containing a Ken Waters article that describes a bespoke 350 Rigby from the 50’s or 60’s, built on a standard length military Mauser action. Just as was the case with Harry Selby’s 416 Rigby, post-war Rigby had to resort to shoehorning their 350s into the smaller actions. For me, the 350 Rigby demonstrates how each person’s cartridges choices are deeply subjective. Some folks just fawn over the 350, where I see it as vastly inferior to the rest of the medium mediums. I think I have great reasons to believe this, and I’m sure 350 lovers have great reasons to think I’m full of prunes. Maybe we’re all right, to some extent. The pre-war magnum action 350s are, to me, about as sexy a rifle as has ever been made. However, I would prefer to own one of the several that has been converted to 3-7-5. Big Grin

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

for a bolt gun, it calls for a 3.44 oal- with is 0.1 longer than 30-06 ..

BUT, i wouldn't exactly trust that, and would prepare for a 3.52 max oal, ..

case is 2.75 long, and at 0.764 nose to crimp, that returns 3.515 ..

so, if i was building it, it would be 3.52, for crimping bullets ...

good luck,

This is not a hard conversion and you are not opening the action that much. On a Mauser, altering the feed rails/ramp is the biggest issue and if you are going to do it yourself, I suggest getting Duane Wiebe's booklet on modifying Mauser actions as it is a great help and well worth the money. A standard bolt face will need to be opened up a bit, the rim is slightly smaller than the H&H, although a magnum bolt face would probably work alright. A small extension welded on the front of the magazine to lengthen it, or better yet, new bottom metal for a 375. I converted a Vickers .318 express that had been rebored and rechambered to 35 Whelen at some point in the distant past. A Rental reamer from 4D was sharp enough to cut sight and made short work of the rechamber job. There are several smiths on this site that could do this job for you.

That cased 350 Rigby was mine for a time and really is the only bolt gun I regret selling.
Of course, in keeping with tradition, nothing of mine gains value until I sell it...

I have one in a surplus Mauser action. Its really no bigger than any standard magnum in that I turn the belts off of .375 H&H Mag. brass and shorten it. They are long enough however to require an altered or longer magazine box. But not much.
