I think alot of use mainly use one rifle for most of our hunting.I have hunted with calibers from the 243,264 win mag,308,30-06,300win mag,338 win mag,338-378 Weatherby,35 whelen,375 win.416 rem mag.I chose the 338 win mag for most of my North american hunting. When i need a long range I use my 338-378 weathbebys.I use the 338 calibers almost all the times these days. They have not let me down.I wanted to know what is your choice for all north american Big game deer, pronghorn, sheep, elk, moose and the bears. The bears put a kink in it.Do you trust your 270 at 10 feet on the grizzleys. I like the 338 win mag for anout anything but long range open Tundra where a 300 yard shot is a close one. Then i trush my 338-378 weatherby which is just a bigger 338.I put just the calibers. You can put in your favorite cartridge.

Question:
what is your choice for one cartidge for all North american Big game from Deer to Grizzleys and all inbetween ?

Choices:
.243 cal,
.257
.264
.270
7mm

.300 Win Mag

I have taken most everything but the big bears with it. I used a .280 Rem for all of the horned animals.

Never hunted grizz but I have hunted and killed from sage rats to moose with a 300 Winchester Mag with 180gr Nosler Partitions. Great all around cartridge.

There's too many great rifles and calibers to use just one, but Blaser 7mm Rem Mag down here, and 375 up your way.

I'm a huge fan of the 34 bore & would hunt anyhting in NA w/my 338-06. Not quite flat shooting enough for long prairie shots, but can be done. So the 338winmag would be my choice if saddled w/ only one choice.

I really don't get it. The game don't give a hoot what you shoot them with. On the killing end there ain't a dimes worth of difference between a whole bunch of cartridges. We have our favorites. Shoot what you like and what you have the most confidence in.

And that's all I have to say about that.

If you can afford to hunt griz.....you can afford to own two guns.....

Make one a .270 and one a .35 Whelen! thumb

If we absolutely must use one.....the old .30-06 is still a fine choice

I have lived, worked and hunted in Grizzly country all of my life and with cartridges from the .243W. to the .458M. in my safes. I don't care to shoot Grizzlies, but, have been there and seen a number shot.

MY lifelong favourite is the .338WM., 250 NP in good CRF rifles. I also have and like .300 H&H, 9.3x62, 9.3x74R and .374H&H rifles.

There is NOT a "huge" difference between a .30-06 and a .338WM, as some will often opine, but, there IS a difference and in favour of the .338.

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

The trusty old 30-06, IMO...hands down is the North American all-around Big Game gun, utilizing bullets from 55 grs to 220 grains. Ammo is cheap, aplenty & that caliber should be around forever.

Of the choices you listed, I picked the .270 Win. but, then again, I'm a real slut for that chambering anyway. Overall, I'd select a .30-06 as some others mentioned. And "yes", I'd shoot a grizzly with my .270 Win. A friend of mine shot several with his years ago up in the Brooks. I would select my shot but I have a lot of confidence in it, my ability with it and the 150 gr. Partition. Been using the ol' .270 for about 40 years up here with nary a problem.
That's me tho.

While I have seen grizz tracks where I hunt there are no tags available for them in this area.

This never ending attempt to limit us to one or even a few guns makes you all sound like my wife. Bottom line is a guy needs a deer gun, moose gun, elk gun, antelope gun, africa gun or two, groundhog gun, squireel gun, - I think you get the idea. Good news is I haven't even got to shotguns yet. Do you have any idea how mant different criiters there are that need to be taken with a differnet shotgun? Before a guy knows what's happened he's got 50 different guns for the potential array of critters that might need slayed and we haven't yet addressed home and personal defense. This limited battery stuff has got to stop!!

I think if i had to pick just "ONE" caliber for every in North America,Canada and Alask and even a good chunk of Africa..... I would have to pic the 300 Weatherby Mag... I bring this one up from a handloaders stand point becouse I use to have one and miss it alot Frowner I had a Weatherby VanGard with the 24" barrle and was getting 3270fps out of it with a 180gr bullet wich made it Awsomely flat shooting.. and also shot 190gr Cast with Trail Boss at 1700+ fps so it can be used for a very wide range and the .308 cal bullet is easy to find from a reloaders stand piont with a wide range of waight 100 gr to 250gr....

If I were to do it over agin I would Bild one on a Remington 700 Action with a 26" barrle with a Med-Hevy type barrle .675-.750 at the muzzle. A Luepold 3.5-10X40 VX-III or 4.5-14X40 VX-III or a Nikon Monarch 2.5-10X42 or 3-12X42 some thing with lots of adjustments and tac turets Mill Dot is a must for me. Nice synthetic stock....

My .270 WSM does everything for me in the lower 48, except big bears. If I were to hunt big bears,
I would have something 9.3mm or larger. Maybe a .358 at the VERY least.

The best all around calibre is the same as it was almost 100 years ago -the .30-06. In the hands of a skilled rifleman, nothing will get away from the .30-06.

I took 7mm because it was to closest to being a choice. My pick would be 300WM. Range, hitting power, economical, and bullit choice. The rest just don't cut it. I'm sure I could pick at lease 5 more great cal.s this is just the best if you get only one.
