Limited to deer sized game & larger, I would pick a .270 Win & .300 Win Mag. The third for Africa would be .375 H&H.

If we discount varminting and I can keep my .17HMR and 220 swift for the small stuff and look at big game, I would be happy with my 338 Lapua for all NA game, but probably would choose one of my 375s for the great bears that bite back. For Africa add my 458 Lott.

Everyone is different, and a choice for one (me!) won't work for another. Despite owning many rifles, I have whittled my favorites down to the .17HMR and 220 Swift for varmints and use my 338 Lapua for mulies and elk. The 458 Lott gets the nod as my squirrel vaulter par none and my hopeful African campanion on DG. The 375 H&H just has to have a home because it is such a good round.

.17HMR, 220 Swift, 338 Lapua, 375 H&H and 458 Lott. I like and use the other rounds I have but these are my go to cartridges.

There are those that do, those that dream, and those that only read about it and then post their "expertise" on AR!

All I would need would be two.

1. Caliber .30 Model of 1906; and

2. .375 Holland & Holland Belted Rimless Magnum. Big Grin

There was a pretty good run of cartridge designs between 1906 and 1912! Cool

But since you're offering three, let's add the .22 Long Rifle.

Well the post says to hunt with not to just have to shoot. Also it don't include handguns so I could be happy with my .257 AI and my .300 Winny for all my NA hunting. I would have a couple different stocks to put them in though! I have to go with the .375 H&H for Africa

It'll never happen, but mine would be .243 and .338 WM. That said I could do it all with a 7x57 or .30-06 if that was all I had. I think if I could only have one it would be the 7x57, some 160 partitions and a pickup load of H414. You'd be surprised what you can do if it's all you have.

35 Whelen
458 Lott, or my 470

I only listed one rifle for N. American hunting b/c I don't think I could give up bird hunting, and I think my 35 Whelen is capable of taking anything in N. America. If I did list another rifle, it would probably be my Chapuis 9.3x74R simply because I love it.

The smart choice for Africa is the 416 b/c it's versatile enough to use on PG and DG. That said, a 458 Lott can easily be loaded to duplicate the 416's ballistics, and it can obviously be loaded up to handle any sized game. If I were only going after buff, ele, and hippo, I'd certainly keep the chapuis 470.

My thoughts exactly. You can't get anymore practical or economical than that! And if you forget or lose your ammo you can get more at the grocery store. Or as Idaho Sharpshooter said you could replace the 375 with a 416. I would go with the Rem Mag and not the Rigby just for ammo availability.

22 LR, 9.3x74 in a Chapuis, 470 in a Searcy. I can use a Makarov bullet in the 9.3 for large varmints until they get the size of bear, then go for a 300 to 320 gr for bigger varmints. The 470 in case I win the lottery and go to Africa and Argentina for a collection of several kinds of buff and a side order of pigs. Packy

Since I don't hunt small game, and rarely varmits my two gun pick would be a .270WCF, and a .340 Wby. Mag. If I could have three guns I would go with a .243 Win., .30Gov't06, and a .375 H&H Mag.

I would have to opt for a 22 L.R and if that counts then scratch the .338, 375, and I will simply use 220 gr. bullets in the 06.
